How To Make Jack-O-Lantern Rice Krispy Treats

Grease the Muffin Pan

Before you start making your pumpkin rice krispie treats, it’s important to grease your 12-cup muffin pan. This will ensure the treats can be easily removed once they’ve cooled and set in the refrigerator. To grease the pan, use a pastry brush to lightly coat each cup with melted butter or margarine. Once all the cups are greased, set aside and move on to the next step.

Melt Marshmallows

Next, you’ll need to melt your marshmallows in a large pot over medium heat. Be sure to stir often so that the marshmallows don’t burn or stick to the bottom of the pot. Once they are fully melted, remove them from heat and proceed to the next step.

Add Food Coloring

Now, it’s time to make your pumpkin rice krispie treats orange! To this, add red and yellow food coloring until you get the desired shade of orange. Stir until fully combined before proceeding to the next step.

Add Rice Krispie Cereal

Once your marshmallow mixture is orange, add one bag of Rice Krispies cereal and stir with a greased rubber spatula until everything is completely combined. Now you’re ready to fill those muffin cups!

Fill Muffin Cups & Refrigerate

Using your greased rubber spatula, fill each muffin cup with enough of the marshmallow mixture so that it comes up just slightly higher than the top edge of each cup (this will help create a rounded shape when they cool). Once all of your cups are filled, place them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until completely set before continuing on with carving out holes and drawing faces on each pumpkin!

Notes:

Adding the food colors to the marshmallows BEFORE the rice krispies is crucial to ensure the color blends properly.

I like to discard the middle piece of the Kit Kat bars and use only the end pieces as they have a clean, finished look.

The writing gel doesn’t harden, so I recommend piping on the faces at the last minute to avoid smearing. Alternatively, black frosting that will dry and harden can be used.
