WastewaterSCAN’s monitoring showed that COVID-19 levels in wastewater samples from the Bay Area were significantly higher in July than the previous month.

The reported virus concentrations in July were 136% higher than they were in June, and almost 54% of the sites monitored reached the ‘high’ category.

The increase has been observed in several communities, such as San Francisco, San Jose, Sunnyvale, San Rafael, Vallejo and Napa. COVID transmission is rising over a wide area rather than remaining confined to one neighborhood or city.

Wastewater surveillance works by picking up traces of viruses in sewage systems before a large number of people have received medical care or taken formal tests.

Wastewater can show changes in the level of community transmission earlier than traditional case numbers because infected people can discharge viral material even if they never get a confirmed diagnosis.

The most recent figures show a significant change in the method used by public health officials to monitor COVID; since fewer routine tests are now being carried out, wastewater has become one of the best ways of working out whether infections are increasing or decreasing.

School Reopenings Add New Attention to the Summer COVID Increase

Amanda Bidwell, the scientific program manager with WastewaterSCAN, said wastewater monitoring can function as an early warning system because it offers insights into spread within a community before a large number of cases show up in healthcare data.

The researchers are also looking at whether the current rise follows patterns observed in previous summer waves, since in past years COVID activity has increased during the warmer months before reaching another peak later in the year.

In the coming weeks things will be important since more students move into classrooms and the various communities get used to having more people indoors. Although rising levels in the wastewater do not ensure a major increase, they do indicate that the virus is still active.
