Conservatives Hit Back at Newsom After He Calls for Trump’s Removal Under the 25th Amendment

California Gov. Gavin Newsom attempted to turn President Donald Trump’s election-integrity address into a national debate over presidential fitness. Instead, his demand quickly reopened one of the Democratic Party’s most uncomfortable political wounds: its response to concerns about former President Joe Biden’s age and public performance.

Newsom described Trump’s address as a “legitimate 25th Amendment moment,” dismissing the speech as the rambling of a leader detached from reality. Conservatives immediately accused him of applying a standard to Trump that prominent Democrats allegedly resisted applying to Biden. The clash rapidly moved beyond one speech and became a broader fight over credibility, consistency and who gets to declare a president unfit.

Newsom Turned a Speech Into a Fitness Fight

Trump delivered a primetime address focused on election security, foreign interference and alleged vulnerabilities in the American voting system. The White House promoted the appearance as an address on election integrity and later released material supporting the administration’s claims, although some reporting noted that the central allegations had not been independently.

Newsom responded with a video attacking both Trump’s claims and his state of mind. He said the speech needed “tin foil” and accused Trump of preparing to undermine confidence in the 2026 midterm elections before votes were cast. Newsom’s claim that Trump intends to rig the election remains a political accusation, not an established fact.

The governor’s choice of language guaranteed attention. Calling for the 25th Amendment is not an ordinary policy disagreement. It suggests that the president may be unable to perform the responsibilities of the office, raising the argument from partisan criticism to a question of constitutional capacity.

Conservatives Reached Straight for the Biden Record

The Republican National Committee answered Newsom with an especially harsh post accusing Democrats of having “propped up” Biden while ignoring questions about his condition. Other conservative commentators argued that Newsom had forfeited the credibility to discuss presidential fitness because he had publicly supported Biden during his presidency.

The RNC’s demeaning description of Biden was political rhetoric, not a medical assessment. Still, the underlying charge of inconsistency gained traction because concerns about Biden’s age were not invented after he left office. They had become a major issue during the 2024 election campaign and intensified following his debate with Trump.

Biden’s halting debate performance alarmed Democratic officials, donors and strategists. Some elected Democrats began questioning whether he should remain the party’s nominee, while Biden acknowledged that he no longer debated as effectively as he once did. He later withdrew from the presidential race.

That history gave Republicans an easy counterattack. Rather than defending every statement in Trump’s speech, conservatives shifted the argument toward Newsom’s past judgment. The strategy transformed the issue from “Is Trump fit?” to “Why should voters trust Newsom’s standard?”

The 25th Amendment Is Not a Political Shortcut

Newsom cannot invoke the 25th Amendment himself. Under Section 4, the process begins when the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet or another body legally created by Congress declare that a president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office. The vice president then becomes acting president.

Should the president dispute that declaration, Congress may eventually decide the matter. Keeping the vice president in control would require a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate. The amendment was designed for presidential inability, not as a faster substitute for impeachment or an instrument for removing an unpopular political opponent.

With Vice President JD Vance and Trump’s Cabinet showing no public indication that they support such a move, Newsom’s statement functioned primarily as political messaging. It expressed his belief that Trump was unfit, but it did not place the country on a realistic path toward constitutional removal.

Democrats Joined Newsom’s Call

Newsom was not alone. Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari of Arizona also argued that the 25th Amendment should be considered, repeating concerns she had raised earlier in the year. Democratic influencer Harry Sisson similarly endorsed Newsom’s position and described Trump as unfit.

Their support strengthened Newsom’s standing among voters who viewed Trump’s speech as dangerous election denialism. It also made it harder to dismiss the episode as one governor’s impulsive insult. The president’s critics were deliberately trying to create a sustained debate about his age, conduct and ability to exercise power.

However, repeating the phrase “25th Amendment” does not prove presidential incapacity. Neither Newsom nor his allies publicly presented a medical diagnosis or an assessment from officials responsible for activating the amendment. Their argument rested largely on Trump’s rhetoric and behavior during the address.

Newsom’s Attack Exposed a Credibility Trap

The most effective political attacks often rely on standards the speaker has applied consistently. Newsom’s problem is that Republicans can point to his previous defense of Biden and ask why similar public concerns did not produce the same dramatic constitutional language.

That does not mean Trump’s age or performance should escape scrutiny. Trump was 80 when Newsom made the remarks, and questions about a president’s health, judgment and ability to perform the job are legitimate regardless of party. The Biden controversy should not become a permanent shield against examining Trump.

It does mean Newsom must explain the difference. Without a clear standard, his call can appear less like constitutional concern and more like partisan escalation. Conservatives recognized that vulnerability immediately and forced the conversation back onto Democratic behavior during the Biden years.

A Preview of the 2028 Political Battlefield

Newsom has positioned himself as one of Trump’s most visible Democratic opponents. Their feud has included disputes over immigration enforcement, federal power, election rules and California’s governance. Each confrontation gives Newsom a national platform while allowing Trump’s allies to portray him as an ambitious governor auditioning for a future presidential campaign.

His 25th Amendment statement fits that pattern. It was dramatic, instantly shareable and designed to dominate political conversation. Yet it also demonstrated the risk of fighting Trump on personal fitness rather than policy: every accusation can be returned with examples from the Democratic Party’s recent past.

The episode therefore produced no serious movement toward removing Trump. What it created was a test of political memory. Newsom wanted voters focused on Trump’s speech, but conservatives made them look backward at Biden.

That reversal may be the story’s lasting significance. In modern politics, a devastating attack requires more than sharp language. It requires a standard strong enough to survive when the opposition turns it around.
