Americans Are Asking a New Question About the Iran War as Trump Defends the Nation’s Missile Supply
A five-month war with Iran is exposing a difficult truth about modern military power: possessing the world’s most advanced weapons is not the same as being able to replace them quickly.
The Trump administration is pushing back against reports that U.S. forces have nearly exhausted supplies of two critical long-range Army missile systems. However, the debate is growing beyond the number of missiles left in storage. It now touches on America’s ability to fight an extended conflict, deter other major rivals and rebuild weapons faster than they are being fired.
Reuters reported Tuesday that the Army had used “virtually all” of its available Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as ATACMS, and Precision Strike Missiles during the conflict with Iran. The outlet cited people familiar with internal U.S. military data.
The Precision Strike Missile, or PrSM, is the Army’s newer replacement for ATACMS. Both weapons allow troops to hit valuable targets from hundreds of miles away without sending pilots into heavily defended airspace.
According to the report, the scale of their use has raised concerns inside the government about how the military would respond if another crisis developed involving China, Russia or another well-armed adversary. The White House strongly rejected the idea that America had lost the ability to carry out military operations.
“We have far more munitions than anyone in the world, and far more than we need,” President Donald Trump said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.
Trump blamed the previous administration for transferring large quantities of weapons to Ukraine and European allies. He also said U.S. defense manufacturers were producing more ammunition than ever while expanding factories and equipment.
The president’s response addressed the broader size of the American arsenal. The Reuters report, however, focused on a narrower and more complicated issue: the availability of specific high-end weapons that cannot be quickly replaced by other systems.
A shortage of one weapon can change an entire strategy

Military stockpiles are not interchangeable. A country may possess large numbers of bombs, rockets and artillery shells while still facing shortages of the exact weapons required for a particular mission. A standard missile cannot always perform the job of an ATACMS, Patriot interceptor or Tomahawk cruise missile.
ATACMS and PrSM are designed to destroy command centers, air-defense systems, supply hubs and other important targets from long range. Their speed, accuracy and reach make them especially valuable against an enemy capable of defending its airspace.
That creates a strategic problem when inventories fall. Commanders may have to become more selective about which targets justify using scarce missiles. They may also have to rely more heavily on aircraft, drones or shorter-range weapons, potentially increasing operational risks.
This is why the reported depletion matters even if the U.S. military still possesses an enormous arsenal overall. The question is not simply whether America has weapons. It is whether it has enough of the right weapons for several possible conflicts at once.
Classified numbers leave room for competing narratives
Exact figures for U.S. missile inventories are classified, making it difficult to independently confirm the scale of the reported drawdown.
That secrecy serves a clear national security purpose. Publicly revealing how many interceptors or long-range missiles remain could help an adversary calculate how long it might take to overwhelm American defenses.
It also allows officials and outside analysts to present sharply different interpretations. Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said the military has everything it needs to carry out missions chosen by the president.
“America’s military is the most powerful in the world and has everything it needs to execute at the time and place of the President’s choosing,” Parnell said.
He pointed to successful operations across different combatant commands and said the military maintains a deep range of capabilities to defend American interests.
Independent analysts have offered a more cautious assessment. The Center for Strategic and International Studies recently estimated that the U.S. had used approximately 65% of its Patriot interceptor inventory since the Iran war began. It also estimated that stocks of THAAD interceptors had declined by at least 38%.
Those estimates were based on publicly available information and budget data rather than access to classified stockpile figures. Reuters reported that its sources believed the estimates were broadly consistent with internal military data.
The competing claims may not be entirely contradictory. The Pentagon can remain capable of conducting missions while also experiencing serious pressure on particular weapons inventories.
Defensive missiles may be the hardest weapons to ration
The reported strain on Patriot and THAAD interceptors presents a different challenge from the depletion of long-range strike missiles.
ATACMS, PrSM and Tomahawks are used to attack targets. Patriot and THAAD systems are designed to stop incoming ballistic missiles and protect troops, bases, cities and allies.
Commanders can sometimes delay or cancel an offensive strike. They have far less flexibility when an enemy missile is already approaching a military installation or populated area.
That makes defensive interceptors politically and militarily difficult to conserve. Every decision not to fire carries the risk of casualties or severe damage. Yet firing expensive interceptors repeatedly against sustained attacks can drain inventories at a pace manufacturers may struggle to match.
The Iran conflict may therefore be testing more than the size of America’s arsenal. It is testing whether the country’s production system can sustain missile defense during a long campaign.
The real contest is moving from the battlefield to the factory
Advanced missiles may be used in seconds, but building replacements can take months or years. Production depends on specialized engines, guidance systems, explosives, electronics and components supplied by a limited number of manufacturers. Expanding output is not as simple as adding another shift at a factory.
Companies may need new facilities, trained workers, secure supply chains and long-term government contracts before making costly investments. Bottlenecks involving a single component can slow the completion of an entire missile.
This industrial challenge has become one of the central lessons of the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. Modern wars can consume precision weapons much faster than peacetime procurement systems were designed to replace them.
Trump has repeatedly met with executives from major defense companies and pressed them to increase production. Following a White House meeting in March, he said contractors had agreed to quadruple production of what he described as “Exquisite Class Weaponry.”
During later meetings and a defense summit in July, Trump continued urging the industry to accelerate its work.
“We have the best quality in the world, but we need a little more speed,” he told executives.
That statement captures the heart of the problem. American weapons may be technologically superior, but technological superiority offers less protection when production remains slow.
Drones can reduce pressure, but they cannot solve everything
The Pentagon is increasingly investing in inexpensive drones and autonomous systems that can be manufactured in far greater numbers than sophisticated missiles.
The idea is to avoid using a multimillion-dollar weapon against every target. Lower-cost drones could handle surveillance, electronic warfare, deception and some strike missions, allowing commanders to reserve premium missiles for the most dangerous or valuable targets.
This approach could reshape military planning. Instead of relying mainly on a limited collection of expensive systems, U.S. forces could overwhelm an opponent with large numbers of cheaper platforms.
Still, drones are not complete substitutes for ATACMS, PrSM or Tomahawks. Many inexpensive drones lack the range, speed, payload and survivability required to penetrate strong air defenses or destroy hardened underground facilities. Some can be disrupted by electronic warfare, shot down or prevented from reaching distant targets.
Long-range precision missiles remain essential when the target must be hit quickly, from a great distance and under heavily defended conditions.
The emerging strategy is therefore based on combination rather than replacement: large numbers of affordable drones supported by smaller quantities of powerful precision weapons.
America must prepare for more than one crisis
The most serious concern raised by the Reuters report involves simultaneous threats. For decades, the United States has built a military designed to operate across several regions. That global posture depends on the assumption that enough ships, aircraft, troops and weapons will be available if more than one crisis develops.
A prolonged war in the Middle East could weaken deterrence elsewhere if rivals believe Washington has fewer precision missiles available for another conflict.
Military planners must therefore consider not only the weapons required to win the current war, but also the weapons that must remain unused as a warning to other adversaries.
That calculation becomes harder when allies also rely on American systems. Patriot batteries, missile interceptors and long-range weapons may be needed in Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific at the same time.
Trump said the U.S. would begin providing more weapons to European allies and other partners as domestic production expands. That promise will depend heavily on whether factories can increase output without leaving American forces exposed.
The budget reflects a changing definition of readiness
Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget would increase spending on missile production, air defense, Tomahawk procurement, drones and autonomous systems.
The proposal reflects a growing belief that military readiness cannot be measured only by the number of troops, aircraft or warships available today. It must also include the country’s ability to replace weapons during a long conflict.
A missile sitting in storage is a military asset. A factory capable of producing thousands more under wartime pressure may be an even greater one.
The full condition of America’s missile inventories remains hidden behind classified data, official denials and open-source estimates. But the broader warning is becoming difficult to dismiss.
The Iran war is showing that even the world’s most powerful military can face limits when advanced weapons are consumed faster than industry can reproduce them. Trump’s forceful response may reassure allies and challenge adversaries, but the lasting answer will not come from statements alone.
It will come from assembly lines, supply chains, and how quickly the United States can turn production promises into missiles.
