Burger King is known for the Whopper, but some of the chain’s most interesting menu items are not available in the United States.

One example is the Texas BBQ King, a burger sold in South Africa that combines two flame-grilled beef patties with cheese, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, and crispy onion rings.

It is a simple combination, but it stands out because it leans heavily into smoky, rich barbecue flavors instead of the vegetables and spicy toppings found on some U.S. burgers.

For American Burger King fans, that raises an obvious question: Why is a burger called the Texas BBQ King being sold overseas instead of in Texas?

The Texas BBQ King Keeps Things Simple

The South African Texas BBQ King is built around a few familiar fast-food ingredients.

It includes two beef patties, cheese, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, and crispy onion rings, all served on a sesame seed bun. The standard build includes no lettuce, tomato, or pickle.

That gives the burger a heavier, more indulgent profile, with the barbecue sauce and onion rings doing most of the work for flavor and texture.

For customers who like burgers topped with onion rings and barbecue sauce, the combination is likely to feel familiar.

But Burger King does not currently offer this exact version as a standard menu item in the United States.

It Is Not the Same as the Texas Whopper

Burger King does have a Texas-themed burger in the U.S., but it is very different.

The Texas Whopper includes a flame-grilled beef patty topped with American cheese, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, white onions, pickles, jalapeños, mayonnaise, and yellow mustard.

That makes it a much more heavily topped sandwich. The biggest difference is barbecue sauce.

Despite its name, the U.S. Texas Whopper does not list barbecue sauce among its standard ingredients, while barbecue sauce is a defining element of the South African Texas BBQ King.

The South African version also uses crispy onion rings as a major topping. So while both burgers carry a Texas-inspired name, they offer very different eating experiences.

U.S. Customers Can Build Something Similar

Burger King fans in the United States can get fairly close to the Texas BBQ King.

The Rodeo Double Cheeseburger already includes two flame-grilled beef patties, two slices of American cheese, crispy onion rings, and barbecue sauce on a sesame seed bun. That covers most of the major ingredients found on the South African burger. The key missing ingredient is mayonnaise.

Adding mayonnaise to a Rodeo Double Cheeseburger would create a combination that closely resembles the Texas BBQ King. It would not necessarily be identical, since recipes, portions, and preparation can differ by market.

Still, it is one of the easiest ways for U.S. customers to approximate the overseas burger without leaving the country.

Burger King Menus Can Look Very Different Around the World

The Texas BBQ King is part of a broader pattern at Burger King.

The company operates thousands of restaurants internationally, and menus often change by country.

That allows Burger King to offer regional products while still keeping familiar items such as flame-grilled beef burgers at the center of the brand.

The United Kingdom is one example.

Burger King UK has introduced more premium burgers through its Gourmet Kings range, which launched in 2021.

One menu item, the BBQ Steakhouse Angus, has featured an Angus beef patty with barbecue sauce, smoked cheddar, bacon, crispy onions, tomato, rocket, and mayonnaise.

That burger is more elaborate than the Texas BBQ King, but both use barbecue flavors and crispy onions to create a richer, steakhouse-style profile.

Burger King UK Also Introduced a Wagyu Burger

Burger King UK expanded its premium burger lineup again in 2025 with a wagyu burger.

The burger used 100 percent British wagyu beef and included caramelized onions, pink pickled onions, crispy onions, rocket, and caramelized onion mayonnaise on a seeded brioche bun.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay appeared in the burger’s advertising campaign.

However, reports at the time made clear that Ramsay did not create the product.

Instead, the campaign used his celebrity profile to help promote it.

The launch showed how far Burger King is willing to move beyond its traditional fast-food image in some international markets.

Nigeria Has Its Own Regional Burger King Items

Burger King’s international differences are not limited to burgers. In Nigeria, the chain has offered side dishes that reflect foods commonly eaten in the country.

In 2024, Burger King Nigeria introduced fried plantain cubes, fried sweet potato cubes, and yam fries. These choices give customers alternatives to standard French fries while incorporating ingredients widely used in Nigerian cuisine.

Burger King Nigeria continued that local approach in September 2026 with a jollof rice offering developed in collaboration with Nigerian food creator Chef T.

Reports described the meal as including jollof rice with chicken and plantain. That is a major departure from what most American customers expect to see at Burger King.

But it also shows how the chain adjusts its menu to fit local tastes.

International Menus Give Burger King More Room to Experiment

Burger King’s global menu strategy allows the chain to maintain familiar branding while offering very different products from country to country.

South Africa has the Texas BBQ King. The United States has the Texas Whopper and Rodeo Double Cheeseburger. The United Kingdom has offered Angus and wagyu burgers. Nigeria has featured sides such as plantain, yam fries, sweet potato, and jollof rice.

Each market keeps some elements of Burger King’s core identity while adding items designed for local customers.

Could the Texas BBQ King Work in the U.S.?

Burger King has not confirmed plans to bring the Texas BBQ King to the United States.

Still, the burger’s ingredients are not especially unusual for American fast food. Barbecue sauce, cheese, onion rings, mayonnaise, and double beef patties are all familiar components.

Burger King already sells most of those ingredients together on the Rodeo Double Cheeseburger. That makes the Texas BBQ King unusual mainly because of where it is sold, not because of what is on it.

For U.S. customers who prefer smoky barbecue flavors over lettuce, tomato, and spicy toppings, the South African burger could have obvious appeal.

Until Burger King decides otherwise, however, American customers will have to settle for customizing a Rodeo Double Cheeseburger to get something close.

And that makes the Texas BBQ King another example of a fast-food item that feels perfectly suited to the U.S. market, even though it remains an overseas offering.
