Europe Battles Record Heat and Wildfires

Europe’s summer has moved beyond uncomfortable heat.

Across the continent, weeks of scorching temperatures have dried out forests, lowered major rivers, strained power systems and helped wildfires spread through communities already struggling with drought.

New data released Monday by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service shows just how extraordinary the season has become.

Western Europe recorded its hottest combined June and July on record, with an average temperature of 21.62 degrees Celsius, or about 70.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

That was 2.79 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and surpassed the previous record set in 2022.

The numbers help explain scenes that have become increasingly familiar this summer: firefighters confronting walls of flame, residents leaving threatened communities, brown fields replacing green landscapes and smoke hanging over cities hundreds of miles away from the fires themselves.

And August is offering little relief.

Western Europe Has Been Trapped in an Extraordinary Cycle of Heat

The current crisis did not begin with one exceptionally hot afternoon. Western Europe has endured repeated heat waves since May, creating a cumulative effect that has steadily removed moisture from vegetation and soil.

Copernicus says Western Europe experienced its third and fourth heat waves since May during July.

Even though those episodes were less intense than some of June’s extremes, the continuing sequence made the summer remarkable for its persistence.

France, Spain, England and Ireland were among the areas that experienced temperatures far above normal.

June alone was already historic.

The World Meteorological Organization said Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record, averaging 20.74 degrees Celsius, or about 69.3 degrees Fahrenheit. That was 3.05 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 June average.

Records fell across multiple countries. Germany registered 41.7 degrees Celsius, or about 107 degrees Fahrenheit, at Coschen near the Polish border on June 28, according to the WMO. Hundreds of German weather stations recorded all-time highs.

Hungary set a June record of 40.7 Celsius, while Austria reached 40 Celsius and several other European countries broke or approached longstanding temperature records.

France endured particularly punishing conditions. MĆ©tĆ©o-France reported that June 24 produced the country’s highest national average daily temperature on record, at 30 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures reached 43.8 Celsius, or nearly 111 Fahrenheit, in Pullyau.

The heat did not disappear when July arrived. France went on to record its hottest July since national records began in 1900, with an average temperature of 24.9 degrees Celsius, Reuters reported.

Scientists say the repeated heat waves are being intensified by a combination of persistent high-pressure systems, extremely dry land and the broader warming climate.

Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said drying soil can make the problem worse because the land loses some of its ability to cool the surrounding air.

Wildfires Have Turned Extreme Heat Into a Wider Emergency

The most visible consequence has been fire.

Copernicus described July’s wildfire activity in Western Europe as exceptional both in the amount of land burned and the emissions released into the atmosphere.

Hot weather, dry vegetation and low soil moisture created conditions in which fires could ignite and spread with enormous intensity.

France has suffered some of the season’s most dramatic destruction.

A major wildfire in the Gironde area burned nearly 42,000 hectares, according to Copernicus, making it the largest area burned by a single French wildfire since World War II, according to reports cited by the agency.

The disaster also prompted an enormous evacuation operation.

Spain has faced its own severe emergency. Fires in Madrid and Ɓvila forced about 100,000 evacuations and burned roughly 55,000 hectares, Copernicus reported. Spain declared a national emergency to mobilize additional resources.

Across France and Spain, the scale of evacuations has been extraordinary.

Copernicus said nearly 400,000 people had needed shelter from fires during the recent crisis. At the same time, the European Union activated its civil protection mechanism to help the two countries obtain firefighting personnel and equipment.

But the danger does not stop at the fire line.

Wildfires release enormous quantities of microscopic particles that can travel far beyond the burning area. Copernicus found extremely poor air quality across parts of southwestern Europe, exposing millions of people to dangerous pollution levels.

In Bordeaux, concentrations of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 briefly climbed above 300 micrograms per cubic meter during late July, levels Copernicus described as hazardous or extremely poor under European air-quality classifications.

Madrid also experienced high particulate concentrations as wildfire smoke mixed with traffic pollution and Saharan dust.

That ability of smoke to travel is becoming an important part of Europe’s wildfire threat.

Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service Director Laurence Rouil warned that larger fires can push smoke higher into the atmosphere, allowing it to travel thousands of kilometers and affect places that may rarely experience major wildfires themselves.

The Heat Is Also Draining Rivers and Straining Europe’s Infrastructure

The summer emergency is increasingly becoming a water crisis as well.

Rainfall and soil moisture were exceptionally low across parts of France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom during July.

Copernicus found that soil moisture across Western Europe was even lower than during July 2022, another year remembered for severe drought.

Some of Europe’s most important rivers have suffered as a result. Flows on the Seine, Rhine and Danube have fallen well below normal, creating problems for irrigation, drinking-water supplies, ecosystems, shipping and electricity generation.

Low river levels matter far beyond the communities sitting along their banks. The Rhine is one of Europe’s most important commercial waterways, carrying everything from chemicals to fuel and industrial materials.

Nuclear and other power stations also depend on abundant water for cooling, meaning extreme drought can force facilities to reduce production.

The oceans are providing another warning sign.

Copernicus said the average July sea-surface temperature across the world’s extra-polar oceans reached 20.96 degrees Celsius, the highest July figure in its dataset and above the previous record set in 2023.

Waters along Europe’s Atlantic coast and western Mediterranean also experienced record July temperatures and widespread marine heat waves.

Globally, July 2026 was tied with July 2024 as the second-warmest July in the Copernicus ERA5 record, behind July 2023. The month stood 1.47 degrees Celsius above the estimated 1850-1900 preindustrial average.

For Europeans enduring another punishing summer, however, climate statistics are no longer distant numbers on a chart.

They are showing up as burned forests, smoky skies, shrinking rivers, evacuation orders and nights that remain dangerously warm long after the sun goes down.

What makes the summer of 2026 especially concerning is not one broken record.

It is the way extreme heat, drought, wildfire and water shortages are reinforcing one another at the same time, turning what once might have been viewed as separate weather disasters into a much larger regional crisis.
