She remembered Jacob as a child who was still growing into the person he was becoming. “This is my Jacob Kai Freytes at age 10,” she wrote alongside a photo. “In my mind he is still here, and I, his titi, reprimanding him to put away his clothes, his bike, and not eat in the room.”

She added that the memory of him would remain with her forever, remembering “the boy that was and the man he was shaping up to be.” The family’s grief reflects the pain felt by many of the children lost to gun violence, where a single moment of violence can permanently change the future of an entire family.

Neighbors Remember Jacob as a Kind and Talented Kid

Residents in the neighborhood said Jacob was known as a friendly and energetic child who enjoyed spending time outside and playing sports.

Walter Colon, 57, said Jacob was a good kid who loved basketball and had a bright personality. “He was a good bright kid. He’s into sports basketball. He was just 12 years old,” Colon said.

Colon said he had spoken with Jacob shortly before the shooting. He remembered seeing the boy outside the building and greeting him after not seeing him for some time.

“I shook his hand outside in front of the building. I said, ‘Hey, it’s good to see you. I haven’t seen you in a minute,’” Colon recalled.

About 30 minutes later, Colon received the devastating news that Jacob had been killed. The moment left him struggling to process how quickly an ordinary interaction had turned into a heartbreaking memory.

Community Left Questioning Another Act of Gun Violence

Neighbors said the shooting has shaken the area and renewed concerns about the impact of street violence on innocent residents. Colon described Jacob’s death as a tragedy that should never have happened.

“There was fighting over there. There was shots fired and people got hit. He was one of them,” Colon said. “This is not a natural cause. This is a heinous crime. We don’t ask for this. Life is unfair.”

The shooting highlights a painful reality faced by communities across New York and other major cities: children can become victims even when they are not involved in conflicts happening around them.

For Jacob’s family, the focus is not only on the investigation but on remembering the child they lost.
