What began as a worried family’s request for a welfare check quickly turned into one of the most disturbing murder investigations northwest Indiana has seen in recent memory.

Serena Desiree Dolnics, 32, is accused of killing her father, Gregory Dolnics, inside the Morgan Township home they shared near Valparaiso. Investigators allege that Gregory suffered numerous sharp-force injuries before his heart was removed and placed on his body. Serena has been charged with murder and has entered a not-guilty plea. The allegations against her remain unproven, and she is legally presumed innocent unless prosecutors establish her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Unanswered Telephone Calls Sparked Concern

The case began shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, when a relative contacted authorities because Gregory was not answering telephone calls. According to WTHR’s account of the court documents, family members told dispatchers that Serena lived with Gregory and had recently made unusual statements whenever they asked to speak with him.

As the relative remained in contact with emergency dispatchers, Serena’s boyfriend allegedly began sending messages to the family. He reportedly claimed that he had seen Serena covered in blood and feared that Gregory had been stabbed. The boyfriend also expressed concern that Serena might harm herself, according to reports describing the probable cause affidavit. When a Porter County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the property, the boyfriend was reportedly standing outside. He allegedly told the officer that Serena had locked him out of the house.

The deputy looked through a window and saw what appeared to be drops of blood on the floor. From another position, the officer reportedly spotted a motionless person lying inside the locked residence. After additional deputies arrived, officers forced their way into the home. A local report hosted on the Town of Chesterton’s official website states that deputies found Gregory’s body on the floor after entering the property.

Blood was allegedly visible on nearby furniture and across parts of the residence. Gregory had suffered injuries to his head, face, arms, hands and neck, according to investigators. Authorities also described a severe wound to his chest. Investigators alleged that his chest cavity appeared empty and that what seemed to be his heart had been placed on his stomach. The disturbing discovery transformed the welfare check into an active homicide investigation.

Officers Found Serena Behind a Locked Door

As officers searched the residence for other people or possible threats, they reportedly saw a bedroom door close and lock. The Porter County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team was called to assist. At approximately 9:47 p.m., officers entered the room and took Serena into custody without further incident.

According to the affidavit details reported by PEOPLE, Serena was barefoot when officers found her. Investigators alleged that blood was visible on her feet, legs, and tank top. No other individuals were found inside the residence. Serena was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries to both hands. Medical personnel reportedly said the wounds appeared consistent with injuries that could occur when a knife slides through someone’s hand during use.

Investigators later recovered three knives from the home. All three allegedly had blood on their blades and handles. Detectives also documented what appeared to be barefoot blood prints near Gregory’s body. Drops of blood reportedly formed a trail through the kitchen and toward Serena’s bedroom.

After receiving medical treatment, Serena allegedly waived her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with detectives. She reportedly told investigators that she had spent part of the day watching television and that her father had not been feeling well. She also claimed that she and Gregory generally got along, although they sometimes had minor disagreements.

Serena allegedly denied seeing her father injured. When questioned about the wounds on her hands, she reportedly said she had hurt herself while working outside with gardening equipment. She suggested that a weed trimmer or small saw might have caused the injuries.

Investigators, however, reported that they found no apparent garden on the property. They also said they did not locate blood-covered gardening shears or a small saw that could support her explanation. Those allegations are expected to become important parts of the prosecution’s case. The defense will have the opportunity to challenge how the evidence was gathered, interpreted and presented.

Autopsy Results and the Murder Charge

An autopsy later determined that Gregory had suffered multiple sharp-force injuries. Examiners reportedly identified cuts to his head and face, wounds on his arms and hands, and several stab wounds around the back of his neck.

His preliminary cause of death was listed as multiple sharp-force injuries, and the death was ruled a homicide. Court-document summaries also state that the autopsy confirmed Gregory’s heart had been removed. Law&Crime’s review of the case reported that the investigation included the knives, the blood evidence, Serena’s hand injuries, and her explanation about gardening.

Serena was formally charged with murder in Porter County on July 28. The Porter County Sheriff’s Office booking system provides public access to recent jail records, although its listings change as new bookings are added.

During a court appearance on July 30, Serena entered a not-guilty plea before Porter Circuit Court Judge David C. Matsey, according to the Chicago Tribune. Reports indicated that she was ordered to remain in custody without bond. Authorities have not publicly announced a verified motive. Although the physical allegations described in the affidavit are graphic, they do not explain what prosecutors believe led to Gregory’s death.

That unanswered question may become central as the case proceeds. For Gregory’s surviving relatives, the investigation represents far more than a collection of knives, blood patterns and court filings. Their efforts to contact him began with concern and ended with confirmation that he had died inside his own home. The criminal proceedings will now move through the Porter County court system. Prosecutors must prove that Serena committed the crime, while her defense has the right to examine witnesses, challenge forensic evidence and offer alternative explanations.

Until that process is complete, Serena remains accused rather than convicted. What is certain is that a family’s unanswered telephone calls led deputies to a locked house, a bloodstained interior and a father whose death has left investigators confronting an exceptionally grim collection of allegations.
