7 Canned Foods That Taste Surprisingly Good Straight From the Can
Canned food is getting a fresh look, and the numbers are surprising. According to Grubhub’s 2025 Delivered Report, grocery orders for tinned fish jumped 209% compared with 2024, showing how much interest in these convenient pantry staples has grown on the platform. But seafood isn’t the only canned food worth noticing.
Some canned foods already have enough flavor to enjoy without heating, seasoning, or following a recipe. From juicy fruits to smoky seafood, these seven pantry favorites prove that sometimes the easiest snack is the one you don’t have to cook.
Canned Peaches

Canned peaches might be one of the most underrated treats hiding in your pantry, especially when you’re craving something sweet without wanting to prepare an entire dessert. Packed in juice or syrup, the soft, juicy slices offer a pleasant combination of sweetness and fruity flavor that makes them enjoyable straight from the container.
In a Sporked taste test, food editor Justine Sterling sampled 16 canned peach products, judging them on flavor and texture, and found noticeable differences between varieties. Her findings suggest that choosing peaches with a firmer texture and a pleasant balance of sweetness and tanginess can make a big difference, so don’t assume every can will taste the same.

Canned Pineapple Chunks
If you enjoy tropical flavors, canned pineapple chunks are an easy pantry snack to keep on hand. Unlike a whole pineapple, which requires peeling, trimming, and cutting, canned chunks arrive ready to eat, with a sweet-tart flavor that makes them appealing on their own.
Products like Dole Pineapple Chunks in 100% Pineapple Juice are marketed as ready-to-eat, making them a convenient option when you want something fruity with almost no effort. The pineapple’s bright flavor and juicy texture make it especially refreshing when chilled, though you can also enjoy it straight from a freshly opened can.
Canned Sweet Corn
Sweet corn probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about a ready-to-eat snack, but it deserves a chance. Whole-kernel canned corn is already cooked during processing, and its naturally sweet flavor makes it perfectly enjoyable without butter, additional seasoning, or a trip to the stove.
The experience can also vary by brand, as a blind taste test of four canned corn products showed testers noticing differences in flavor even without adding anything. Try draining a can of sweet whole-kernel corn and tasting a spoonful before heating it, particularly if you enjoy the contrast between gentle sweetness and tender kernels.
Canned Black Olives
There’s something satisfying about opening a can of black olives and enjoying a few before they ever reach a salad or pizza. Their mild, slightly salty flavor and smooth, buttery texture make them a convenient snack, especially for anyone who prefers savory flavors over sugary treats.
According to the California Olive Committee, California ripe olives undergo a traditional seven-day curing process that develops their characteristic mild flavor and texture. The organization recommends enjoying them as-is after draining the packing liquid, so there’s no need to roast, marinate, or otherwise prepare them before eating.
Canned Sliced Beets
Beets may have a reputation for needing roasting or boiling before eating, but canned sliced beets make the process much simpler. They offer a distinctive earthy flavor, gentle sweetness, and tender texture that can be surprisingly enjoyable straight from the can, particularly if you already like vegetables with a more pronounced taste.
Green Giant confirms that its canned sliced beets are fully cooked and ready to eat without additional preparation. You can enjoy the slices at room temperature or chill them first for a different experience, making them an interesting alternative when you’re tired of reaching for the same familiar pantry snacks.
Canned Sardines in Olive Oil
Sardines are one of those foods people tend to have strong opinions about, but a good can packed in olive oil can be surprisingly satisfying. Their tender, flaky texture and rich, savory flavor mean they don’t necessarily need lemon, crackers, or a complicated recipe to become an enjoyable snack.
Speaking to Martha Stewart, Lucia Flors, co-founder of Spanish tinned seafood company Siesta Co., explained, “In Spain, we cherish the simplicity of sardines, which is how I typically enjoy them.” Her preference reflects an approach that keeps the focus on the fish itself, and choosing sardines packed in olive oil is a good starting point if you want to discover why some seafood enthusiasts eat them straight from the tin.

Canned Smoked Oysters
Smoked oysters might be the biggest surprise on this list, especially if you’ve only encountered oysters at seafood restaurants. The canned variety offers a distinctive smoky, savory, briny flavor and a soft texture that makes each bite noticeably different from more familiar pantry foods.
Seafood company Crown Prince sells naturally smoked oysters packed in olive oil and specifically recommends enjoying them straight from the can. The smoking process gives them much of their flavor before the can is opened, so there’s little reason to add anything unless you personally prefer a little heat or acidity.
Before you automatically reach for the stove, try one of these seven canned favorites as-is. You might discover that some of your easiest pantry snacks need nothing more than an open lid and a fork.
