8 Boxed Mac and Cheeses Ranked From Worst to Best

Spread the love

Boxed mac and cheese may look like one of the simplest foods in the grocery aisle, but the category has gotten surprisingly competitive. The familiar blue box is still enormous. Kraft says it sells about 1 million boxes of its macaroni and cheese every day. At the same time, newer brands are eating into the old leaders’ share. Goodles, for example, grew from just 0.8% of U.S. shelf-stable mac-and-cheese spending three years earlier to 7.8% in the 12 months through June 2026.

So which box actually deserves a spot in your pantry?

For this ranking, cheese flavor and overall balance matter most, followed by pasta texture, sauce consistency, convenience, and price. Published taste tests from outlets including Better Homes & Gardens, Sporked, Allrecipes, and Taste of Home were considered alongside current product information and October 2026 retailer prices.

One important note: these eight products were not all tested side by side by one publication. This is an editorial ranking based on the available evidence. And “worst” definitely does not mean terrible. Even the last-place box has a pretty convincing reason to buy it.

Great Value Original Macaroni & Cheese

Price: about $0.64 for 7.25 ounces at Walmart

If your main goal is getting a pot of mac and cheese on the table for pocket change, Great Value makes a strong argument.

Better Homes & Gardens praised its familiar texture and classic mac-and-cheese personality, while Sporked considered it a surprisingly convincing budget alternative to Kraft. That is impressive territory for a box costing well under a dollar.

The reason it lands at the bottom of this group is flavor. Better Homes & Gardens wanted more intensity from the cheese sauce and noted that its slight sweetness could divide tasters.

Still, at roughly nine cents per packaged ounce, this is the bargain hunter’s choice. Add a little black pepper or your favorite seasoning and you have an inexpensive weeknight side without much fuss.

Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese Bold & Cheesy

Price: about $1 on sale or $1.50 regularly for 5.9 ounces at Kroger

Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese does not exactly whisper “subtle.”

Sporked gave Bold & Cheesy an enthusiastic 9.5 out of 10, praising its salty, snack-inspired cheese flavor. The powdered sauce includes cheddar and blue cheese ingredients, helping create the intense flavor people expect from something carrying the Cheetos name.

So why does it sit near the bottom?

Balance.

This box is for people who want their macaroni to taste like it wandered into the snack aisle and came back covered in cheese dust. That can be wonderfully fun, but it is less versatile than a more traditional cheddar sauce.

If maximum cheesy punch is your priority, feel free to move this much higher on your personal list.

Kraft Original Mac & Cheese

Price: about $1.19 for 7.25 ounces at Target

There is a reason Kraft is still the reference point for boxed macaroni and cheese.

The flavor is unmistakable: buttery, salty, slightly sweet and deeply nostalgic. Taste of Home even named Kraft its overall winner in one comparison.

Other testers were less convinced. Better Homes & Gardens wanted firmer noodles, while Allrecipes found Kraft less creamy than some competitors.

That leaves Kraft Original in an interesting position. It is still one of the best values here, and familiarity counts for something. But compared with thicker sauces and sturdier pasta from newer or deluxe-style competitors, the classic blue box can feel a little lightweight.

Sometimes nostalgia wins anyway.

Annie’s Shells & Real Aged Cheddar Mac and Cheese

Price: about $1.59 for 6 ounces at Target

Shells have one important advantage over ordinary elbows: they are basically tiny sauce buckets.

That works nicely for Annie’s.

Allrecipes praised this version for its balanced sauce thickness and satisfying creaminess. The shells help grab and hold the cheddar sauce instead of letting it slide to the bottom of the bowl.

The main criticism was that it tasted slightly salty.

At around 27 cents per packaged ounce, Annie’s is noticeably more expensive than Kraft or Great Value, but it offers a nicely balanced middle ground between old-school boxed mac and the pricier premium options.

Goodles Cheddy Mac

Price: about $2.99 for 6 ounces at Target

Goodles has gone from newcomer to serious mac-and-cheese competitor remarkably quickly, and Cheddy Mac shows why.

Better Homes & Gardens praised its intense cheese-cracker-like flavor, depth and silky sauce. The pasta is designed to have a springy chew, while tapioca flour helps thicken the sauce.

Flavor is not the problem here.

Price is.

At roughly 50 cents per packaged ounce, Goodles is easily one of the most expensive boxes in this comparison. That makes it harder to recommend as an everyday pantry staple when several strong competitors cost substantially less.

For shoppers willing to pay more for a bolder, richer experience, though, Cheddy Mac is one of the most interesting boxes on the shelf.

Velveeta Shells & Cheese Original

Price: about $2.69 for 12 ounces at Target

Velveeta wins points before you even take the first bite.

There is no milk to measure. No butter to soften. Just boil the shells, drain them and squeeze in the ready-made cheese sauce.

Sporked praised Velveeta’s thick, smooth and buttery coating, and it is easy to understand the appeal. Every shell gets absolutely covered.

There is one catch. In later comparisons, Sporked also detected a plasticky bitterness when Velveeta went head to head with Kraft Deluxe.

That criticism keeps it below the strongest options in this group, but for pure creamy convenience, Velveeta remains extremely hard to beat.

Kraft Deluxe Original Cheddar

Price: about $2.69 for 14 ounces at Target

Think of Kraft Deluxe as the blue box after a promotion.

Instead of thin macaroni and powdered cheese mix, you get plump ridged pasta and a ready-made cheddar sauce. Like Velveeta, it requires no extra milk or butter.

Sporked awarded it a perfect 10 out of 10, praising the sturdy pasta, creaminess and more convincing cheese flavor compared with Velveeta.

Allrecipes was less impressed, saying the noodles were strong but the sauce did not taste quite cheesy enough.

Even with that disagreement, Kraft Deluxe offers an excellent combination of convenience, portion size and price. At roughly 19 cents per packaged ounce, it is also a better value than several smaller premium boxes.

Cracker Barrel Sharp Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese Dinner

Price: about $3.69 for 14 ounces at Target

If cheese flavor is the deciding factor, Cracker Barrel Sharp Cheddar makes the strongest case for the top spot.

The box combines large, ridged macaroni with a ready-made sharp cheddar sauce. Those ridges matter because they give the sauce plenty of places to cling.

Taste of Home specifically praised the noticeable cheddar flavor and sauce-catching pasta. All recipes went even further, selecting Cracker Barrel as its winner for creaminess and cheesiness.

It is not the cheapest box here, but the 14-ounce size helps soften the price difference.

Most importantly, it delivers what many people actually want when they buy mac and cheese: pasta that holds up, sauce that feels substantial and cheddar flavor that does not disappear after the first bite.

That combination makes Cracker Barrel Sharp Cheddar the strongest overall pick in this comparison.

Prices were retailer snapshots checked October 7, 2026 and may vary by location or promotion.
