Small London Pizza Chain Crowned World’s Best, Becoming First British Winner Of Global Award
London’s Napoli on the Road has made pizza history after being named the world’s best pizzeria, becoming the first British establishment to claim the top prize at the prestigious 50 Top Pizza World Awards.
The victory marks a remarkable journey for a business that began as a humble mobile pizza operation on the streets of London before rising to the top of an international ranking traditionally dominated by Italian restaurants. The award was announced in Naples, the birthplace of pizza, adding further significance to the achievement.
Founded by chef Michele Pascarella, Napoli on the Road beat hundreds of competitors worldwide to secure the number one spot in the 2026 edition of the 50 Top Pizza World Awards. The result places London at the center of the global pizza conversation and challenges the long-held assumption that the finest pizzas can only come from Italy.
From a three-wheel pizza van to global recognition

Napoli on the Road’s rise has been described as a modern food success story. Pascarella launched the business in 2016, selling Neapolitan-style pizzas from a three-wheeled Piaggio Ape fitted with a wood-fired oven. The mobile operation traveled around London, serving customers at markets and events before eventually growing into permanent restaurants.
Today, Napoli on the Road operates locations in Chiswick, Richmond and Soho, transforming the once-small venture into one of London’s most celebrated pizza destinations.
Pascarella, who grew up near Naples in Italy’s Campania region, brought traditional Neapolitan techniques to the UK while developing his own style. His pizzas are known for carefully crafted dough, quality ingredients, and creative combinations that combine Italian heritage with modern ideas.
The chef said he was overwhelmed by the achievement, describing the award as a moment he never expected. The ceremony took place at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples, where the result was revealed before some of the biggest names in the international pizza industry.
A historic win for Britain
The 50 Top Pizza award is widely regarded as one of the most influential global rankings in the pizza world. Unlike competitions based on a single dish, the organization evaluates the complete dining experience, including food quality, hospitality, and service. Restaurants are assessed through anonymous inspections, with judges visiting venues without revealing their identities.
Napoli on the Road’s victory represents a major milestone because no British pizzeria had previously reached the top position. The award has historically been dominated by restaurants in Italy and the United States, making London’s success a significant moment for the UK food scene.
The win also ended the recent dominance of previous champion I Masanielli, a pizzeria in Caserta, Italy, which had held the title multiple times. This year, New York’s Una Pizza Napoletana finished second, while Milan’s Confine ranked third.
Despite Napoli on the Road taking first place, Italy remained the most represented country in the wider rankings. The 2026 list featured restaurants from 36 countries, with Italy contributing the most entries and the United States also strongly represented.
Keeping quality ahead of expansion
Despite international recognition, Pascarella has said he is not focused on turning Napoli on the Road into a large commercial chain. Instead, he wants to maintain the quality and personal connection that helped build the restaurant’s reputation.
The chef has emphasized that growth should not come at the expense of craftsmanship. He has preserved the traditional methods behind his pizzas while continuing to interact directly with customers.
That philosophy has helped Napoli on the Road build a loyal following among London diners and international food enthusiasts. The restaurant’s menu includes classic Neapolitan favorites such as the Margherita alongside more experimental creations inspired by Pascarella’s childhood and Italian culinary traditions.
One signature creation, the “Cheesewick”, combines Italian cheeses with homemade tomato jam, reflecting the restaurant’s willingness to experiment while staying true to its Italian roots.
London’s growing reputation as a food capital
The award adds another achievement to London’s increasingly diverse food reputation. While the city has long been recognized for its multicultural dining scene, Napoli on the Road’s success highlights the growing presence of high-end specialist restaurants outside traditional culinary centers.
The result also demonstrates how global food traditions continue to evolve. Pizza, which originated in Naples, has become a worldwide dish shaped by chefs and communities far beyond Italy.
Other UK restaurants also appeared in the 2026 rankings. Westminster-based 50 Kalò placed 23rd, while Stile Napoletano in Chester was ranked 74th, showing a broader British presence among the world’s leading pizza makers.
For Pascarella and his team, the award represents years of work, from running a small pizza van to standing on a stage in Naples as the world’s top-ranked pizzeria.
The achievement has not only placed Napoli on the Road in the spotlight but has also rewritten the story of where the world’s best pizza can be found.
For pizza lovers, the message from the 2026 rankings is clear: the perfect slice may no longer be found only in Naples, Rome or New York. It may also be waiting in London.
