The Bay Area’s dining scene has received new national attention, with two restaurants from the region earning places on The New York Times’ 2026 list of the best restaurants in the United States. Berkeley’s Bar Panisse and San Francisco’s Restaurant Naides were included among the restaurants recognized for their distinctive approaches to food, hospitality, and culinary creativity.

The recognition highlights two very different expressions of Bay Area cooking. Bar Panisse builds on the region’s long tradition of seasonal, ingredient-focused cuisine, while Restaurant Naides brings Filipino flavors into a modern fine-dining setting. Together, the restaurants reflect the diversity of the Bay Area’s current culinary landscape.

Located in Berkeley, Bar Panisse is connected to the legacy of Chez Panisse, one of the restaurants most associated with California’s seasonal cooking movement. The wine bar and restaurant opened in December 2025 and is led by executive chef Amelia Telc.

The New York Times highlighted Bar Panisse for its simple but carefully executed cooking style. Recognized dishes included creamy butter beans and stuffed zucchini blossoms with sweet peperonata, reflecting the restaurant’s focus on letting quality ingredients take center stage.

Rather than relying on complicated techniques or elaborate presentations, Bar Panisse emphasizes precision, balance, and the character of its ingredients. The restaurant’s approach reflects a long-standing Bay Area philosophy that values seasonality, local products, and thoughtful preparation.

Maud Moulle, the restaurant’s general manager, said the team was pleased with the recognition, describing the acknowledgment as meaningful for a restaurant still in its early days.

The inclusion of Bar Panisse also continues a recent trend of Bay Area wine bars receiving national attention. The New York Times previously recognized San Francisco’s Verjus on its 2025 list, making Bar Panisse the second consecutive Bay Area wine bar the publication has featured.

Restaurant Naides Brings Filipino-Californian Cuisine to the Spotlight

Restaurant Naides, located in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood, represents a different side of the Bay Area dining scene. Founded by Patrick Gabon and Celine Wuu in late 2025, the restaurant offers a tasting menu inspired by Filipino cuisine and California ingredients.

The restaurant has drawn attention for its fine-dining interpretation of Filipino flavors. The New York Times specifically highlighted its version of sinigang, a traditional Filipino sour soup. The publication praised the dish as a standout on the restaurant’s menu.

Naides reflects a broader movement in contemporary dining, where chefs are exploring cultural traditions while applying modern culinary techniques. The restaurant’s menu places Filipino ingredients and flavors at the center of a refined dining experience, offering a perspective that connects heritage with innovation.

The restaurant has also received recognition beyond the New York Times list. According to reports, Restaurant Naides earned its first Michelin star, adding to its growing reputation within the Bay Area restaurant community.

The New York Times list also included four restaurants from Southern California, showing the range and diversity of the state’s culinary scene. The recognized Southern California restaurants were Mesa Agricola in Escondido, Komal in Los Angeles, Jacaranda in Los Angeles, and Yerord Mas in Glendale.

Mesa Agricola was recognized for its tacos and burritos, while Komal was noted for its Mexican cuisine. Jacaranda, located in Los Angeles, was included for its fine-dining approach, and Yerord Mas was recognized for Armenian-inspired dishes.

The inclusion of six California restaurants highlights the state’s broad culinary identity, from traditional and regional cuisines to restaurants experimenting with new interpretations of familiar flavors.

A Reflection of the Bay Area’s Changing Food Scene

The recognition of Bar Panisse and Restaurant Naides demonstrates the continuing evolution of Bay Area dining. While the region has long been known for seasonal cooking and relationships with local producers, newer restaurants are expanding what Bay Area cuisine can represent.

Bar Panisse draws from a tradition rooted in simplicity and respect for ingredients, while Restaurant Naides brings Filipino culinary traditions into a contemporary setting. Their inclusion on a national list shows the range of ideas currently shaping the region’s restaurants.

For diners, the recognition offers a glimpse into two different experiences: one centered on refined simplicity and another focused on cultural storytelling through food. Both restaurants demonstrate how Bay Area chefs continue to create distinctive dining experiences that attract attention beyond Northern California.

As the region’s restaurant scene continues to develop, Bar Panisse and Restaurant Naides show how tradition and innovation can exist side by side. Their recognition places them among restaurants contributing to the ongoing conversation about the future of American dining.
