Black Briar’s food concept focuses on a modern American approach with cooking built around coal-fired meats, fish, vegetables, and grains. The restaurant also features chilled seafood and oysters through its raw bar.

The restaurant’s description on OpenTable’s Black Briar listing describes the concept as “the soul of a timeless tavern with a new school spirit.” The same description states that “the cooking is focused on coal-fired meats, fish, vegetables and grains.”

Rather than presenting itself as a steakhouse, Black Briar is positioned as a contemporary tavern with a broad menu approach that includes land-based cooking, seafood and raw-bar offerings.

Drinks, bar seating and the dining room

The beverage program at Black Briar includes strong pours, a modern American wine list and creative takes on classic cocktails, according to the restaurant’s OpenTable listing.

The space includes a 20-seat wraparound bar, an open kitchen and a tavern dining room. Those elements are part of the restaurant’s overall format, combining a full-service dining experience with a prominent bar area.

Black Briar’s location is listed as 201 N. Morgan St., Chicago, Illinois 60607. The restaurant is in the Fulton Market/West Loop area, one block south of Fulton Market, with its entrance on Morgan Street, according to OpenTable.

Chef Jimmy Papadopoulos returns with new restaurant project

Black Briar is led by executive chef Jimmy Papadopoulos, who previously worked at Bohemian House and later at Bellemore, the Boka Restaurant Group restaurant that has since closed.

Papadopoulos is joined by co-owner Tim Anderson, who was his former colleague at Bellemore, according to Eater Chicago’s report on Black Briar’s opening and the restaurant’s OpenTable information.

The opening marks Papadopoulos’s return to restaurant ownership after his work at those Chicago restaurants. His latest project brings together a tavern format, coal-fired cooking and seafood-focused offerings in the Fulton Market area.

A new addition to Fulton Market’s dinner scene

Black Briar adds another full-service restaurant option to Chicago’s Fulton Market area, with a menu focused on coal-fired cooking, seafood, cocktails and wine.

With its opening, the restaurant introduces Papadopoulos’s latest dining concept to the neighborhood while bringing together a tavern-style setting, raw-bar offerings and a beverage program designed around dinner service. The restaurant joins the area’s expanding collection of chef-led dining destinations while maintaining its own focus on contemporary American tavern cooking.
