U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn has taken a major step toward making Tennessee history after winning the Republican nomination for governor, positioning herself as the overwhelming favorite heading into the November general election.

NBC News and The Associated Press projected Blackburn’s victory on Aug. 6 after she defeated two other conservative candidates in the Republican primary. If she wins in November, Blackburn would become the first woman to serve as governor of Tennessee, marking a historic milestone in a state that has never elected a female governor.

“One year ago, we set out on this journey with one goal: to make Tennessee America’s conservative leader and show the nation what strong, bold, conservative leadership looks like,” Blackburn wrote on X shortly before 9:30 p.m. ET following her victory.

“Tonight, I am humbled and honored that you’ve chosen me as your Republican nominee for Governor,” she added.

The victory places Blackburn at the center of Tennessee’s political future as she prepares to face Democratic nominee Jerri Green, a Memphis City Council member who also made history by becoming the first woman to win the Democratic nomination for governor in the state.

Blackburn entered the Republican primary as the clear favorite. The 74-year-old senator has spent decades building a conservative political profile, first serving four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming the first woman elected to represent Tennessee in the U.S. Senate.

She is now serving her second Senate term and has remained a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump and his America First agenda.

Although Trump did not formally endorse a candidate in the Tennessee Republican primary, Blackburn repeatedly emphasized her alignment with his political priorities throughout her campaign.

During her victory speech, Blackburn pledged to continue Tennessee’s conservative direction and described the state as a national example of Republican leadership.

“Tennessee over the last 16 years has really become a Christian, conservative standard bearer,” Blackburn said.

She also promised to work with the Trump administration on issues including immigration enforcement and government spending. Blackburn said she would continue efforts to reduce waste in government through what she called a “Tennessee DOGE,” referring to the Department of Government Efficiency initiative promoted by Trump allies.

Her campaign focused heavily on conservative priorities, including tax cuts, reducing government spending, fighting crime, supporting parental rights in education, protecting gun rights, and opposing policies she described as “woke” curriculum in schools.

Democratic Challenger Jerri Green Faces Difficult Path

While Blackburn enters the general election with strong Republican support, Democratic nominee Jerri Green is preparing for a difficult battle in a state that has strongly favored Republicans in recent elections.

A Democrat has not held Tennessee’s governor’s office since Phil Bredesen left office in 2011 after completing his second term. Republican candidates have dominated statewide elections, including Trump’s nearly 30-point victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in Tennessee in the 2024 presidential election.

Despite the challenge, Green celebrated her primary victory and highlighted the historic significance of her nomination.

“Let’s go make history again,” Green wrote on X after securing the Democratic nomination.

Her campaign has focused on affordability, strengthening public schools, expanding healthcare access, especially in rural communities, and addressing concerns about what she described as political extremism in Washington.

Green argued that Tennessee voters are looking for leaders focused on everyday issues rather than national political battles.

Both Blackburn and Green’s victories guarantee that Tennessee voters will choose between two female candidates in November, ensuring the state will elect its first woman governor regardless of the outcome.

Blackburn’s Republican primary victory came after facing challenges from U.S. Rep. John Rose and state Rep. Monty Fritts.

Rose presented himself as an alternative to established politicians, emphasizing his background as an eighth-generation Tennessee farmer. His campaign argued that his experience outside Washington gave him a different perspective.

Like Blackburn, Rose strongly supported Trump and described himself as an “unapologetic supporter” of the former president’s agenda. His platform focused on education, infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and economic development.

After losing the primary, Rose congratulated Blackburn and encouraged Republicans to unite behind her campaign.

“We have a general election next. And even though things didn’t go our way tonight, I hope you’ll join me in supporting our Republican nominee for governor of Tennessee,” Rose said.

Fritts ran on a smaller-government platform, promoting policies centered around reducing taxes, protecting gun rights, supporting voter identification laws, and limiting government expansion.

Although the race became more competitive as election day approached, Blackburn maintained her advantage and secured the nomination.

The Tennessee governor’s race is expected to attract national attention because of Blackburn’s long political career and the possibility of another Republican victory in a deeply conservative state.

Blackburn’s campaign has portrayed the election as a choice between maintaining Tennessee’s conservative identity and rejecting policies associated with progressive movements.

During her victory speech, she warned against what she described as a shift toward socialism among some Democrats and called on Republicans to remain united.

“We have to defeat the Democrats in November,” Blackburn said.

The senator also gained attention during the primary for a campaign advertisement focused on China, where she used a visual involving fortune cookies to highlight her promise to take a tougher stance against Beijing. The advertisement drew both support and criticism.

As the November election approaches, Blackburn enters the race with significant advantages, including statewide name recognition, strong Republican support, and a long political record.

However, the race will also test whether Tennessee voters are ready for a historic change. Regardless of the outcome, the election guarantees a new chapter in Tennessee politics, with voters set to choose the first woman to lead the state.
