8 States With the Most Costco Warehouses, and 3 That Have None

Costco may feel like a familiar part of grocery shopping across the country, but its warehouse footprint is far from evenly distributed. California alone has 136 warehouses listed in Costco’s official directory, putting it well ahead of every other state. At the opposite end, three U.S. states have no Costco warehouse listed at all.

According to Costco’s official warehouse directory, these are the eight states with the highest warehouse counts, followed by the three states where Costco currently has none listed.

California

California sits in a category of its own when it comes to Costco locations. The official directory lists 136 warehouses in the state, nearly three times the number found in second-place Texas.

For shoppers who regularly rely on Costco for groceries, pantry staples, bulk household items, and other everyday purchases, California’s total shows just how concentrated the chain’s presence can be in certain parts of the country. No other state on this list comes close to its warehouse count.

Texas

Texas takes second place with 48 Costco warehouses listed in the company’s directory. That is a substantial footprint, but the gap between Texas and California is striking. California has 88 more warehouses than Texas based on these figures.

Even so, Texas stands comfortably ahead of the rest of the states on this ranking. Its total is 13 higher than Florida, which comes next with 35 warehouses.

Florida

Florida ranks third with 35 Costco warehouses. The state sits much closer to Washington than it does to Texas. Florida has only two more warehouses than Washington, compared with a 13-warehouse gap between Florida and Texas.

That makes the middle of the ranking much tighter than the top. For shoppers looking at Costco’s national footprint, Florida marks the point where the numbers begin clustering more closely together.

Washington

Washington follows closely behind Florida with 33 warehouses listed. A difference of just two locations separates the two states, making them one of the tighter pairings near the top of the list.

After Washington, however, there is a noticeably larger drop. Illinois, the next state in the ranking, has 23 warehouses, 10 fewer than Washington. That makes Washington the final state on the list with more than 30 Costco warehouses.

Illinois

Illinois lands in fifth place with 23 Costco warehouses. Its count puts it firmly in the middle of the eight-state ranking. Illinois trails Washington by 10 warehouses but stays just ahead of New York, which has 21.

The numbers also show how quickly the ranking tightens once the largest warehouse states are out of the way. From Illinois onward, only three warehouses separate fifth place from the two states tied at the bottom of the top eight.

New York

New York has 21 Costco warehouses listed in the official directory, placing it sixth. That puts the state just two warehouses behind Illinois and only one ahead of both New Jersey and Arizona.

The narrow spread makes this part of the ranking especially close. While California and Texas are separated by dozens of warehouses, positions five through eight are separated by only three locations in total.

New Jersey

New Jersey comes in with 20 Costco warehouses, tying Arizona for the same total. Although New Jersey appears seventh in this list, it does not have more warehouses than Arizona. The two states are tied based on Costco’s directory.

That shared total also places both states just one warehouse behind New York. The bottom portion of the top eight is therefore extremely close, with only a small numerical difference separating several states.

Arizona

Arizona also has 20 Costco warehouses, matching New Jersey exactly. That tie is important because Arizona is not actually behind New Jersey in warehouse count, even though it appears as the eighth entry in the ranking.

The next-highest state outside this list is Michigan with 18 warehouses, so the Arizona-New Jersey tie marks the cutoff for the eight states with the largest Costco warehouse totals in the directory.

3 States With No Costco Warehouses

Rhode Island

Rhode Island is one of three U.S. states without a Costco warehouse listed in the official directory. Instead of a location count, Costco’s state directory displays “–” for Rhode Island, indicating that no warehouse is listed there.

That creates a sharp contrast with states at the other end of the ranking, especially California, which has more than a hundred locations.

West Virginia

West Virginia also has no Costco warehouse listed in the directory. Like Rhode Island, the state is shown with “–” rather than a numerical warehouse count.

For everyday shoppers, that means Costco’s national presence still has clear gaps. Even while several states have 20, 30, or more warehouses, West Virginia remains one of the three states without a listed location.

Wyoming

Wyoming completes the group of three states with no Costco warehouse listed. Costco’s directory shows “–” for Wyoming as well, putting it alongside Rhode Island and West Virginia.

American Samoa and Guam also display “–” in the directory, but they are U.S. territories rather than states, so they are not included in this state-by-state comparison.

The contrast across the country is hard to miss. California leads with 136 warehouses, Texas follows with 48, and several other states have 20 or more. Yet Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming have none listed at all.

For a chain closely associated with bulk grocery runs and everyday household shopping, Costco’s warehouse footprint looks very different depending on the state.
