The company said it is working to restore access for approved providers as quickly as possible. The approval does not appear to apply to Fable 5, a related Anthropic model designed for broader general use.
The shift follows a June 12 export-control directive from the Trump administration that suspended access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Anthropic said at the time that the government believed it had identified a way to jailbreak Fable 5. Jailbreaking means finding a way around an AI system’s safety guardrails so it can produce restricted, dangerous, or unintended outputs.
That earlier order disrupted companies using the technology and raised a broader question for the AI industry: who gets access to the most powerful systems when those systems may be useful for both defense and abuse?
