8 Foods You Probably Shouldn’t Order on a First Date

Spread the love

The food may look delicious on the menu, but some dishes can turn a relaxed date into a battle with your plate.

A first date is already a little unpredictable. You are trying to keep the conversation flowing, remember the other person’s name, decide whether to order another drink, and somehow look completely natural while eating in front of a near-stranger. The last thing you need is dinner fighting back.

That does not mean there is a universal list of “bad” date foods. If you and your date both love ribs, order the ribs. But when you barely know someone, extremely messy, hard-to-eat foods, or foods likely to make you uncomfortable can create unnecessary distractions. Even traditional dining etiquette recognizes that some foods require more attention and technique than others. Emily Post’s guide to tricky foods reminds us that the table can get surprisingly complicated when a meal requires special handling.

A Giant Plate of Spaghetti

Nothing says “romantic dinner” quite like chasing one stubborn noodle around your plate.

Spaghetti is delicious, but it can be an awkward first-date choice because long noodles have a talent for ending up everywhere except neatly in your mouth. One enthusiastic twirl can leave sauce on your chin, shirt, or, in the worst case, somewhere your date notices before you do.

A pasta dish with shorter noodles or a more manageable shape gives you all the comfort without requiring quite so much concentration.

Extra-Garlicky Anything

Garlic is wonderful right up until you lean across the table and realize your dinner is still introducing itself.

Garlic itself is hardly a bad food, but its strong compounds can contribute to noticeable breath after eating. The American Dental Association explains that food breakdown and odor-producing compounds contribute to oral malodor, which is why bad breath can linger after a meal.

If the date is going particularly well, you may eventually stop caring. On date number one, however, ordering the restaurant’s famously intense garlic appetizer might be an unnecessary gamble.

The Three-Tier Burger

There is a point where a burger stops being dinner and becomes an engineering project.

A towering burger packed with cheese, sauce, onion rings, and enough toppings to require two hands can be fantastic with friends. Across from someone you’re trying to impress, though, it can become a slippery, collapsing tower.

You spend more time trying to keep the thing together than enjoying the conversation. A normal-sized burger is still a burger; it simply gives you a fighting chance.

Chicken Wings With Extra Sauce

Wings taste better when you are not worried about sauce ending up on your fingers, cheeks, and sleeves.

Sticky wings are one of those foods that are almost designed to demand your full attention. They can be messy, require hands-on eating, and often leave you reaching for napkins between bites.

That does not make wings inappropriate in general. In fact, some people would happily choose them on every date. The question is whether you want your first dinner together to involve more finger licking than conversation.

The World’s Hottest Curry

There is bravery, and then there is voluntarily setting your mouth on fire while trying to make small talk.

Spicy food can be perfectly enjoyable, but very hot dishes can cause problems for people who are not accustomed to them. Capsaicin—the compound responsible for chili peppers’ heat—can cause digestive irritation, and spicy foods may trigger heartburn in some people. Cleveland Clinic notes that large amounts of capsaicin can lead to symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, or diarrhea.

Unless you already know your tolerance, there is nothing wrong with choosing the medium version instead of turning dinner into a personal endurance challenge.

A Huge Seafood Tower

It looks spectacular when it arrives, but spectacular isn’t always date-friendly.

Crab legs, lobster shells, oysters, shrimp, and other seafood can create a wonderful shared meal, but shell-cracking and extracting meat can become surprisingly labor-intensive. You may end up wrestling with shells while your date waits, watches, or tries to figure out how to help.

If seafood is your shared passion, go for it. Otherwise, a seafood dish that arrives ready to eat can preserve much more of the evening’s rhythm.

Anything That Drips Everywhere

If the server gives you three napkins before you have even taken your first bite, pay attention.

Some foods are built for mess: loaded nachos, enormous burritos, ribs drowning in barbecue sauce and sandwiches that collapse the moment you touch them. Bon Appétit’s playful list of date-friendly foods makes an amusing case that even famously messy foods can work, but the bigger point is that comfort and context matter.

With someone you already know, a messy meal can be half the fun. With someone you’re meeting for the first time, you may prefer fewer obstacles between you and the conversation.

The Meal That Is Too Heavy

The biggest danger on a date may not be embarrassment—it may simply be feeling miserable afterward.

A huge, greasy meal can leave some people feeling overly full or uncomfortable, and rich or fatty foods can contribute to heartburn in people who are susceptible to it. Cleveland Clinic notes that rich, fatty, and spicy meals can trigger heartburn for some people, especially when combined with other factors.

That is particularly worth considering if the date includes a movie, concert, walk, or another activity afterward. Nobody wants to spend the romantic portion of the evening quietly negotiating with their stomach.

The Real Rule Is Simpler Than You Think

You do not need to order the safest food on the menu—you want something that lets you enjoy the person sitting across from you.

A comfortable meal leaves room for conversation, laughter, and those little moments when you realize the date is actually going well. It also fits nicely with other simple habits that recharge your mind and body rather than making the entire evening feel like an endurance event.

And honestly, once you know someone well enough, all these rules can disappear. The person who becomes your favorite date may eventually be the same person happily sharing a mountain of wings with you at midnight.

Which food would you absolutely avoid on a first date—and which “messy” food would you order anyway because it is simply too good to resist?
