KFC Is Dropping Pepsi for Coke After Nearly 40 Years, and Some Fans Are Already Threatening to Walk
KFC is about to make a major change to its drink menu, and some customers are already saying the switch could change where they eat. Beginning in January 2027, KFC plans to replace PepsiCo beverages with Coca-Cola products at its U.S. restaurants.
The transition is expected to be completed by spring 2027 and will cover approximately 3,600 U.S. KFC restaurants, according to the companies. The announcement has already triggered some negative reactions online, although those comments do not show that KFC is facing a widespread boycott or losing customers because of the decision.
When KFC will switch from Pepsi to Coke

The change is not happening immediately. KFC and Coca-Cola announced the new U.S. beverage partnership on October 15, with Coca-Cola products scheduled to begin appearing at KFC restaurants in January 2027.
The rollout will take place over time, with completion expected by spring. That means customers should not assume every KFC restaurant will change its beverage lineup on the same day.
The agreement covers the U.S. KFC system, rather than KFC restaurants around the world. Beverage arrangements can differ in international markets, and some overseas KFC restaurants already serve Coca-Cola products.

Why Pepsi stayed with KFC for so long
The Pepsi connection goes back to 1986, when PepsiCo acquired KFC. PepsiCo later spun off its restaurant business in 1997, but KFC continued serving PepsiCo beverages after the separation.
That makes the upcoming change more than a routine menu adjustment. The Pepsi relationship has been part of KFC’s U.S. restaurant experience for about four decades.
There is also an important piece of history that can get lost in the Pepsi-versus-Coke debate: Coca-Cola was already part of KFC’s earlier history. The new agreement therefore represents a return to a beverage relationship rather than Coca-Cola appearing at KFC for the first time.
Why KFC says it is making the change
KFC has tied the new partnership to its broader “Kentucky Fried Comeback” strategy. The company says the relationship will support beverage innovation, food-and-drink pairings, and efforts to improve the customer experience.
KFC U.S. President Catherine Tan-Gillespie also described the agreement in an internal memo as an opportunity to innovate and respond to changing tastes.
The company has not said that the switch is being made because customers overwhelmingly demanded Coca-Cola, and there is no verified information establishing that the change is intended to cut costs.
For now, the official explanation is centered on the restaurant’s broader strategy and what KFC says it wants to do with its beverage offerings.
Some KFC fans are already pushing back
The beverage change has already produced some strong reactions online.
Allrecipes reported one Instagram commenter saying, “As a loyal Pepsi drinker, I just crossed KFC off my list of places to eat.” Another commenter reportedly wrote, “Bye, bye, KFC, it’s been nice knowing you.”
Those comments give the backlash some real customer voice, but they do not establish how widespread the reaction is. There is also no verified evidence that the commenters actually stopped visiting KFC or that the company has suffered measurable customer losses because of the announcement.
Other outlets have repeated the same comments, but that does not make them independent evidence of a larger boycott.
So far, the strongest conclusion is simply that some people care enough about the Pepsi relationship to say publicly that the change could affect their decision to visit KFC.
What will replace the Pepsi drinks?
The official announcement establishes the switch to Coca-Cola products, but it does not provide a complete beverage lineup for every KFC restaurant.
People reported expected options including Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Fanta. Those should be viewed as reported examples rather than a guarantee that every U.S. KFC will carry exactly the same selection.
There is also a notable exception involving Mountain Dew Sweet Lightning. Allrecipes reported that PepsiCo said the drink would remain available at KFC through December 31, after which the company intends to find other ways for fans to enjoy it.
That means fans of Sweet Lightning have a specific date to keep in mind, although the future availability described by PepsiCo does not mean the drink will continue as a KFC menu beverage after that date.

What customers should expect in 2027
The biggest change will be straightforward: KFC’s U.S. beverage supplier is changing from PepsiCo to Coca-Cola.
But customers should not expect every restaurant to make the switch at once. The companies have said the rollout begins in January and should be completed by spring, so individual locations may transition at different points during that period.
The full beverage selection may also vary by restaurant. Customers looking for a particular drink will need to check their local KFC once the transition begins rather than assuming every location will carry the same products.
For Pepsi fans, the change may be disappointing. For Coca-Cola drinkers, it could be a welcome development. Either way, the impact of the switch will depend on how customers respond once the new beverages actually reach restaurants.
For now, the reported online backlash is a reaction to an announcement, not evidence of a customer exodus. KFC’s Pepsi era is coming to an end in the U.S., but whether that changes where people choose to buy their chicken remains to be seen.
