Goldfish Are Getting a New Twist and This Time It’s About Protein

Spread the love

Goldfish is giving its familiar little crackers a new job: delivering more protein per handful. The brand is launching Goldfish 6g Protein in Cheddar and Pizza flavors, each with 6 grams of protein per serving, twice the 3 grams Food Network reports in a serving of traditional Goldfish. The fish shape is staying; the recipe is getting the makeover.

The new crackers are scheduled to reach Walmart and other grocery stores in October, with a wider U.S. rollout planned for early 2027. A 6.6-ounce bag has a suggested retail price of $3.99, though the price you see may vary by store. Here’s what to know before adding the protein-packed fish to your snack rotation.

Goldfish 6g Protein comes in two familiar flavors, Cheddar and Pizza, rather than an entirely new flavor lineup. According to Pepperidge Farm, the crackers are baked and made with cheese. Food Network reports that the brand adjusted the flour-to-cheese ratio and added more dairy solids to increase the protein content, so this is a reformulated cracker, not the original with a new claim stamped on the package.

That distinction matters if you are hoping the new version will taste exactly like the Goldfish you already buy. Food Network writer Casey Clark tried both flavors ahead of the launch and said they still had the brand’s familiar cheesy taste and crunch, but noticed a difference in the aftertaste. “I preferred the Pizza flavor because it tasted more like the original than the Cheddar,” Clark wrote. That is one person’s taste test, of course, not a guarantee that everyone will pick the same favorite.

For shoppers interested in the nutrition claim, remember 6 grams of protein per serving, not per bag. A separate review by Tasting Table reports that a serving of either flavor is 55 crackers and contains 130 calories, 17 grams of carbohydrates, and 4.5 grams of fat. Check the package when the crackers arrive at your store, particularly if serving size or other nutrition details influence what you buy.

Goldfish also says the protein line is baked, not fried, and made with “100% real cheese.” Those details keep the launch recognizable as Goldfish even as the brand responds to demand for snacks with added protein. The result is still a cheesy cracker meant for snacking, rather than a replacement for a meal.

Why Goldfish is making the change

The brand isn’t shy about why it made a protein version. “Protein has become a bigger priority for many families, whether it’s after school, between activities or on the go,” Tiphanie Maronta, senior vice president of Goldfish Crackers, said in a statement reported by Food Business News. She described the launch as a way to meet that interest with “a snack that’s both delicious and familiar.”

In other words, Goldfish is betting shoppers want a little more from a cracker they already know, without switching to a snack that feels entirely different. Six grams per serving gives the company a straightforward comparison with its traditional crackers. Whether that makes the new bag the right pick for you depends on your appetite, preferences, and the rest of what you are eating, not just the largest number on the front of the pouch.

The launch also fits a broader refresh of the Goldfish range. Campbell’s, the brand’s parent company, has discussed protein, whole-grain and gluten-free versions as part of its plans for the cracker line. They are distinct products: shoppers looking for the new protein crackers should check for the 6g Protein Cheddar or Pizza label rather than assuming every newly designed Goldfish bag has the same formulation.

That’s especially useful if you shop for a specific dietary need. “Protein” does not mean “gluten-free,” and a package promising more protein does not tell you everything about its ingredients or allergens. The brand has announced a separate certified gluten-free Goldfish product, with its own rollout and package size. Read the label for the product in your hand instead of treating the new Goldfish varieties as interchangeable.

The first wave is planned for October at Walmart and other grocery chains, followed by broader availability across U.S. retailers in early 2027. Because the launch begins with selected stores, you may not find both flavors everywhere right away. The suggested $3.99 price applies to a 6.6-ounce bag, but it is a suggestion, not a promise of what every retailer will charge.

If you are curious about flavor, Cheddar is the obvious place to start for a comparison with classic Goldfish; Pizza offers another familiar option with the same 6 grams of protein per serving. Clark’s Food Network taste test found the Pizza version closer to its original counterpart, while noting that both retained a recognizable Goldfish crunch. Your own verdict may come down to whether you notice and like the reformulated recipe.

The headline-worthy twist is simple: Goldfish has doubled the protein listed for a traditional serving while keeping its playful shape and two well-known flavors. It is an addition to the snack aisle, not a reason to rethink everything you know about crackers. But if your ideal snack is still a handful of tiny smiling fish, now there is a new bag to consider when it lands on shelves this month.
