Gunfire Erupts Inside Texas Kroger, Leaving Two Men Wounded

A routine Wednesday afternoon grocery run turned into a frantic escape when gunfire erupted inside a Kroger store in Cypress, Texas.

Two men were hospitalized following the July 15 shooting at the Fairfield Marketplace Kroger on Cypresswood Drive, northwest of Houston. Early alerts described ā€œmultiple people shot,ā€ language that understandably sparked fears of a mass attack. Authorities later clarified that no shoppers or employees were reported wounded.

Investigators believe the violence involved the two injured men and may have grown out of a domestic dispute. A 20-year-old suspect has since been identified and charged, while detectives continue reviewing evidence from inside the store.

An Ordinary Shopping Trip Turns Into Mayhem

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office were called to the Kroger at 20355 Cypresswood Drive at approximately 2:50 p.m. after receiving a report of an active shooter.

They arrived in less than two minutes, according to authorities. Deputies encountered one injured man, later identified as Kaden Ausbrooks, leaving the building with a gunshot wound to his neck. A second man was found inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The second man was taken from the scene by Life Flight. Initial reports described both men as being in critical condition, although a later update listed the unnamed victim in stable but critical condition. Ausbrooks was also hospitalized under law-enforcement guard.

Inside the store, shoppers were doing what shoppers usually do—checking prices, reaching into freezers and trying to remember whether they already had milk at home. Then came the sounds no one expects to hear between the cereal and frozen vegetables.

Patrick Young told the Houston Chronicle that he was in the frozen-food aisle when he heard screams followed by popping noises. Customers began rushing toward the exits as the store descended into what he described as ā€œmayhem.ā€

ā€œI haven’t run that fast in so long,ā€ Young said. ā€œIt sounded like fear.ā€

April Johnson was loading groceries into her vehicle outside when she heard noises that initially sounded like firecrackers. The seriousness of the situation became clear when people started screaming and pouring out of the store.

ā€œYou come to the grocery store for one thing,ā€ Johnson said, explaining why the violence felt so unexpected.

Investigators Say the Shooting Was Not Random

The phrase ā€œactive shooterā€ triggered a major police response, but investigators later said the incident did not appear to be an indiscriminate attack on customers.

Preliminary findings suggested the shooting grew from a domestic disturbance involving the two men, authorities said. Family violence investigators were assigned to the case, and surveillance footage from inside the Kroger was being reviewed.

Officials said Ausbrooks was the first person to fire a weapon. However, authorities have not publicly explained every moment of the confrontation, including precisely how he suffered the gunshot wound to his neck. That detail remains part of the investigation.

The identity of the second man has not been publicly released. Investigators have also not disclosed the exact relationship between the two men or provided a detailed account of what allegedly led to the confrontation.

Those unanswered questions matter. Social-media speculation quickly produced several conflicting stories, but authorities have only confirmed that the men apparently knew each other and that the confrontation was not believed to be a random attack on the store.

Perhaps the most significant confirmed detail is that nobody else was physically injured.

Harris County Precinct 4 Captain Juan Flores said early in the investigation that officials had found no injured bystanders. Constable Mark Herman later credited the speed of the police response with preventing further harm.

ā€œWe are grateful that no additional individuals were injured during this incident,ā€ Herman said in a public statement.

Suspect Charged as Kroger Reopens

Authorities identified Ausbrooks as the suspected gunman one day after the shooting.

He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, which authorities described as a first-degree felony. Officials said he would be booked into the Harris County Jail after being released from medical care.

A criminal charge is an allegation, not a conviction. No public court ruling has established guilt, and the investigation remains open.

Kroger initially closed the store while officers secured the building and processed the scene. The company said it was working with law enforcement and arranging counseling for employees who experienced the shooting.

ā€œWe are deeply saddened by the incident,ā€ the company said, adding that it had ā€œinitiated counseling services for our associates.ā€

The Cypresswood Drive store later reopened, according to KPRC 2, although investigators continued examining surveillance footage and other evidence.

For the shoppers and employees who were there, reopening the doors does not erase the memory of running from gunfire in a place built around ordinary routines. The shooting left two men hospitalized, one suspect facing a serious felony charge, and an entire store full of people grateful that the violence did not claim additional victims.
