Making ginger powder at home is easy and satisfying. Turning your fresh ginger into ginger powder is also an excellent way to preserve ginger for long-term storage. Homemade ginger powder can be made in just a few simple steps.

Ginger powder is excellent for adding to your recipes or brewing a comforting cup of tea (and if you’re like me, tea is a must!). The process is similar to drying garlic, but I will take you through all the steps of making this unique powder. It’s a great method to ensure your ginger is stored and ready whenever you need it!

Equipment

  • Oven or Dehydrator (or other drying method)
  • Knife
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Grater
  • Cutting Board
  • Baking Tray

Instructions on How to Dry Ginger to Make Ground Ginger

  1. Peel the ginger and either grate or thinly slice it.

  1. Spread the grated or sliced ginger evenly on a prepared baking tray.

  1. Set your oven to the lowest possible temperature and place the tray on the lowest rack. Allow the ginger to dry for about 2.5 hours or until it becomes dry and brittle. Make sure all moisture is gone—any leftover moisture will create a paste when ground, reducing the ginger’s shelf life.
  2. Once the ginger is fully dried, please place it in a coffee grinder. Pulse the grinder 3 to 4 times, then continue grinding until you have a fine powder.

  1. Sift the powder through a fine sieve, collecting any larger pieces.

  1. Return those to the grinder and repeat the process until everything is finely ground.

What other ways can you dry ginger?

There are several ways to dry ginger for later use.

Air Drying

You can air dry ginger by slicing it thinly and laying the slices on a screen in a warm, dry room, or even threading the slices and hanging them up to dry. However, air drying can be slow, and the results can vary, so keep an eye on the ginger to ensure it dries evenly.

Oven Drying

Another option is to use your oven. Slice the ginger and spread it out on a baking sheet, preferably lined with parchment paper or placed on a cooling rack to improve air circulation. Set your oven to the lowest temperature possible. Be cautious with this method, as ginger can easily burn if you’re not attentive.

Dehydrator

Using a countertop dehydrator is one of the most efficient methods. You can set a low, controlled temperature and dry multiple trays of ginger at once. This allows you to monitor the process closely, ensuring the ginger dries properly without browning.
