Onion powder is an easy way to add depth and flavor to everyday cooking. It works well in everything from soups and sauces to dry rubs, marinades, and simple weeknight meals. A small amount goes a long way, which makes it a dependable seasoning to keep on hand.
One of the biggest advantages of onion powder is its long shelf life. Unlike fresh onions, it doesn’t spoil quickly and doesn’t require peeling, chopping, or cleanup. Making it at home is also a useful way to use up extra onions before they go bad, helping reduce kitchen waste.
We’ll walk through how to make onion powder at home using an air fryer. The process is easy and results in a flavorful seasoning that’s shelf-stable and ready whenever you need it.

Ingredients
- 3 red onions
Equipment
- Air Fryer
- Spice
Grinder , Coffee Grinder, or Mortar and Pestle - Knife
- Cutting Board

Onion Powder Recipe
- Peel the onion and thinly slice it with a vegetable peeler or slicer. Lightly squeeze out excess moisture and blot with a paper towel.

- Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F). Spread the onion slices evenly in the air fryer basket and then cook for 5 minutes at this temperature.
- Then, reduce the heat to 130°C (265°F) and cook for another 5 minutes. Stir the onions, reduce the temperature to 90°C (194°F), and continue cooking until the onions are golden and crispy, which should take about 25 minutes.

- Once done, allow the onions to cool completely.
- Then, grind the dried onions in a coffee
grinder until fine.

And that’s it. You can now use your dry onions.
