New York’s Shark Sightings Are Rising in 2026, but Experts Say the Numbers Hide a Bigger Story.
New York’s beaches have a new summer soundtrack in 2026. Alongside crashing waves and children shouting from the shoreline, drone propellers buzz overhead as lifeguards search the Atlantic for dark shapes beneath the surface.
From Rockaway Beach in Queens to the oceanfront state parks of Long Island, reported shark activity has triggered warnings, temporary swimming restrictions and a fresh burst of public anxiety. By July 21, authorities had logged about 23 sightings around New York since May, with much of the attention concentrated around several busy weeks at the start of July.
The headlines suggest a dramatic invasion. But the reality is far more complicated. Marine experts say New Yorkers may be witnessing several stories at once: sharks following prey closer to shore, conservation efforts helping marine populations recover, warmer waters influencing migration, and a rapidly expanding surveillance network detecting animals that might once have passed unnoticed.
In other words, there may be more sharks in some places. But there are certainly more cameras watching for them.
A Bite at Jones Beach Changed the Mood

Sightings are one thing. Physical contact changes the conversation immediately. Concern intensified after a swimmer was bitten at Jones Beach State Park in early July. The injury reportedly cut deeply into the person’s foot, transforming what had been a season of distant fins and temporary closures into a much more personal warning about the unpredictability of the ocean.
Around the same period, repeated sightings prompted swimming restrictions from Long Island to the Rockaways. Rockaway Beach experienced a major shutdown on July 2 after several sharks were reported offshore during a stretch of dangerously hot weather that had driven crowds toward the water.
Some early reports described the animals as bull sharks, a species that attracts immediate concern because of its reputation and ability to tolerate shallow coastal environments. However, identifying a shark accurately from the beach or a moving drone can be difficult, and the species involved in many sightings remains unconfirmed.
That uncertainty rarely slows the spread of an alarming video. A shadow becomes a shark, a shark becomes a “swarm,” and a temporary safety closure begins to feel like proof that the coastline has fundamentally changed.
Yet reported bites have not risen in step with the number of sightings. New York experienced a more active period of confirmed encounters during 2022 and 2023, even though the public may now be seeing more alerts, videos and drone images than it did during those years.
That difference between detection and danger is central to understanding why New York’s shark story looks different this summer.
New York Is Looking Harder Than Ever

Sharks have inhabited New York’s marine waters for millions of years. More than 13 species migrate through the region annually, each responding differently to water temperatures, food supplies, reproductive cycles and seasonal conditions. What has changed dramatically is why New York is seeing them so often.
After several bites and high-profile sightings earlier in the decade, state and city authorities expanded aerial monitoring along popular beaches. By the beginning of the 2026 season, dozens of drones and trained operators were positioned around the coastline to scan for sharks, schools of baitfish and swimmers in distress.
The expanded program reportedly included 46 drones and 67 operators covering locations stretching from the Rockaways toward Montauk. Drone pilots can patrol sections of ocean that are difficult to observe from lifeguard chairs, giving officials a clearer view of activity just beyond the breaking waves.
That technology creates a statistical puzzle. Imagine that sharks pass a beach regularly, but nobody sees them. They do not become part of an official count, television report, or social media debate. Once drones begin scanning the same beach each day, many of those previously invisible animals are recorded.
The number of sightings rises, even when the number of sharks may not have changed dramatically.
Smartphones, action cameras and social media deepen the effect. A single fin can now be filmed from several angles, posted by multiple witnesses and replayed for millions of people before marine specialists determine what was actually in the water.
More surveillance is unquestionably valuable. It allows lifeguards to clear swimmers, track an animal’s movement and reopen the beach when the immediate risk has passed.
But improved surveillance can also make a familiar natural presence appear new. The ocean has not suddenly filled with wildlife because people installed cameras. The cameras have revealed how much wildlife was already there.
The Sharks Are Following Dinner

The phrase “shark infested waters” creates the impression of predators gathering with swimmers in mind. Marine biology offers a less theatrical explanation: sharks generally move where they can find food.
New York’s coastal waters support schools of menhaden, commonly called bunker, along with bluefish, striped bass and other marine life. When baitfish move close to shore, larger predators may follow.
From the sky, a dense bait ball can look like a shifting dark stain beneath the water. Dolphins, seabirds and whales may appear around the same feeding activity that attracts sharks. A beach with visible marine predators may therefore be experiencing a burst of ecological productivity rather than an organized threat to humans.
New York officials advise swimmers to avoid areas where fish are jumping, birds are repeatedly diving, or seals are present. People should also stay away from fishing activity, where bait and struggling fish can draw predators into a concentrated area.
Most shark bites are believed to involve confusion, investigation or an animal reacting during feeding activity rather than a shark deliberately choosing a person as prey. That distinction does not make an injury less painful, but it does challenge the idea that sharks are patrolling New York beaches in search of swimmers.
A person paddling, splashing, or standing among schooling fish may simply enter the wrong place at the wrong moment.
Warmer Water May Be Rewriting the Schedule
Detection explains part of the increase, but experts are also examining genuine environmental changes that may help explain why sharks are appearing closer to shore.
Ocean temperatures influence where sharks travel and how long they remain in a particular region. As northern waters become suitable for certain species earlier in the year or later into the fall, migration patterns may gradually shift.
Warmer water can also move prey. Sharks do not need to respond directly to changing temperatures if the fish they eat are already moving into new areas.
This does not mean every sighting can be attributed to climate change. Shark movements vary from year to year, and the presence of a single animal near a beach is not proof of a long-term transformation.
However, researchers have warned that warming seas can alter the distribution of marine species and extend the periods when some sharks are found in northern coastal waters. Experts interviewed about New York’s 2026 season said climate-related changes could be encouraging some species to remain in the region longer.
Successful conservation may be another part of the picture. Sharks and several of their prey species have received stronger protections after decades of overfishing and population decline. Their return to coastal ecosystems can create uncomfortable encounters, but it may also signal that parts of the marine food web are recovering.
Sharks serve as important predators that help regulate ocean ecosystems and prevent individual species from overwhelming limited resources. Their presence is not an ecological mistake. It is part of how healthy marine environments function.
Sightings Should Be Taken Seriously, Not Sensationally

None of this means swimmers should ignore a warning.
When lifeguards order people out of the water, beachgoers should respond immediately. Officials may not know the shark’s species, size or intentions, and uncertainty is not a reason to gamble with safety.
Swimming near lifeguards, staying in groups and avoiding murky water can reduce risk. Dawn and dusk may present additional challenges because visibility is lower and marine animals may be actively feeding.
Swimmers should leave the water calmly after seeing a shark. Frantic splashing can attract attention, while attempting to follow, touch, or film the animal at close range creates an unnecessary risk.
Perspective remains essential. The International Shark Attack File confirmed 65 unprovoked bites worldwide during 2025, slightly below the recent 10-year average of 72. The United States recorded 25 of those cases, despite the enormous number of people who entered American coastal waters during the year.
The risk is real, but it remains extremely small.
The Bigger Story Beneath the Surface
New York’s rising shark count is not one simple statistic. It is the product of wildlife, technology, climate, conservation and human attention colliding along one of America’s most crowded coastlines.
Some sharks may be spending more time near New York. Schools of baitfish may be drawing them closer to shore. Recovering marine populations may be placing predators and people in the same waters more frequently.
At the same time, drones are finding animals that lifeguards could never have seen from the sand. Phones are recording moments that would once have vanished with the next wave. Every sighting now has the potential to become a citywide warning within minutes.
That does not make the surveillance unnecessary. It makes interpretation more important.
The lesson of summer 2026 is not that New York’s beaches have become hunting grounds. It is that the Atlantic is alive, unpredictable and far more crowded beneath the surface than beachgoers usually realize.
Sharks belong in that picture. So do careful lifeguards, responsible swimmers and technology that gives everyone a little more warning.
New York is seeing more sharks because several things are changing at once. But the most dramatic change may be the simplest: for the first time, the city is watching almost every shadow that moves through the water.
