Oringo Africana Opens in Former San Antonio Barbecue Space, Bringing Nigerian Food to the East Side
Oringo Africana has opened its first brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1701 E. Houston St. in San Antonio, marking a new chapter for a Nigerian food business that began with home-based sales and later operated as a food truck. The restaurant’s grand opening took place on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The Nigerian restaurant serves West African food and is owned by founder Ugochukwu Christian Ijoma. The opening brings Oringo Africana into a permanent restaurant space on San Antonio’s East Side after growing through smaller-scale operations.
Ijoma’s business journey started with selling Nigerian dishes from home before the concept expanded into a food truck operation. Reflecting on the beginning of the business, Ijoma told What Now San Antonio, “I found out I can sell from home, and that’s how the whole thing started.”
After that home-based start, Oringo Africana continued as a food truck before moving into its current brick-and-mortar location.
Menu Items Include Nigerian and West African Dishes
The restaurant’s menu includes Nigerian and West African dishes such as egusi, fufu, jollof rice, okra, and grilled tilapia. The menu also includes suya tacos, a fusion item reported in earlier CultureMap coverage of the restaurant concept.
Oringo Africana is located in the former Dignowity Meats space at 1701 E. Houston St. The former barbecue business provides the location context for the new restaurant as it takes over the East Side space.
The restaurant’s verified launch services include dine-in, takeout, and event catering.
Ijoma told MySA that diners can expect “bold, authentic West African flavors and generous portions,” a description attributed to the owner rather than an independent review.
Opening Date Moved From Earlier September Plans
The restaurant had originally planned to open on September 5, 2026, but that date was postponed. According to MySA’s reporting, remodeling delays and logistical issues involving ingredient arrivals from Africa contributed to the change, with the opening moved to September 19, 2026.
The opening of Oringo Africana follows the growth of a local food business from home-based sales to a food truck and now a permanent restaurant location. The restaurant joins San Antonio’s East Side with a new place focused on Nigerian and West African cooking.
