Trump Orders $5 Million White House Helipad Redone as Crews Remove 100-Foot Presidential Seal

Weeks of round-the-clock construction are being reversed after President Donald Trump reportedly objected to the landing pad’s slope, adding fresh uncertainty to a project valued at up to $6 million.

A $5 million to $6 million granite helipad designed to protect the White House South Lawn is already being pulled apart. After several weeks of construction, President Donald Trump reportedly ordered major changes because the landing surface appeared tilted against the horizon. Crews have begun dismantling completed sections rather than moving directly toward a final landing test.

The most striking casualty is a nearly 100-foot-wide presidential seal built into the granite. Workers had spent days assembling the enormous centerpiece before Trump objected to how the entire structure followed the natural slope of the lawn. The seal is now being taken apart while contractors reconsider the pad’s elevation, alignment and appearance.

A $6 million solution has become a costly do-over.

The White House has not released a new estimate showing how much the redesign will add to the original $5 million-to-$6 million price range. That leaves an important question unanswered: whether Sikorsky’s contribution will also cover the expense of removing installed granite, preparing the ground again and rebuilding the presidential emblem.

Sikorsky, the Lockheed Martin subsidiary that built the latest presidential helicopters, agreed to fund the initial project through a contribution to the National Park Service. Lockheed Martin confirmed the 8-figure funding range described by Trump but did not disclose one final contract price or explain whether the company would absorb future overruns.

Trump said the company agreed to pay because the new helicopters proved far more powerful than expected. He has described the aircraft as roughly 2.5 times more powerful than their predecessors and said their downward force did more than discolor the grass. In his account, the helicopters “ripped out” sections of turf during landings.

The slope is not merely a cosmetic problem.

The dispute is more complicated than making the helipad look perfectly flat. Federal Aviation Administration guidance calls for a deliberate slope of between 0.5% and 2% on many ground-level helicopter touchdown areas so rainwater can drain away instead of collecting beneath the aircraft. A surface can therefore look slightly tilted and still follow sound engineering practice.

For transport heliports, the FAA recommends a longitudinal gradient of about 0.5% to 1% and a transverse gradient of roughly 0.5% to 1.5%. Contractors now face a narrow balancing act: the rebuilt pad must appear level from the White House while retaining enough slope for drainage, traction, and safe helicopter operations.

The wider South Lawn reportedly drops by as much as 20 degrees in some areas, although the chosen construction zone is flatter. Correcting that natural grade could require more than rearranging granite slabs. Crews may need to alter the underlying ground, raise part of the structure, or create a subtle engineered slope that does not look uneven from a distance.

The helipad is tied to a 23-aircraft presidential fleet.

The permanent landing area was planned for the VH-92A Patriot fleet, which reached its full inventory of 23 helicopters in 2024. According to the U.S. Navy, the fleet includes 21 operational aircraft and 2 test helicopters, allowing some units to fly while others receive maintenance, upgrades, or crew training.

The grass problem was not a surprise discovered only in 2026. In 2019, the Government Accountability Office warned that the VH-92A program had not met a key requirement to land without damaging sites such as the White House South Lawn. Sikorsky was already working on a solution years before the granite project began.

The helicopter program carried an estimated acquisition cost of roughly $4.9 billion, while projected development, procurement, operation and support costs over a 40-year service life exceeded $20.5 billion. Those figures make the helipad a small part of the overall program, but the visible demolition has turned it into one of the fleet’s most public construction setbacks.

At the upper estimate of $6 million, the landing pad represents only around 0.12% of the aircraft program’s estimated $4.9 billion acquisition cost. Yet its location outside the president’s home means every removed slab, exposed patch of soil and construction vehicle can be photographed, making the relatively small project politically larger than its share of the budget.

The White House has used helicopters for nearly 70 years.

Presidential helicopter travel from the South Lawn dates to 1957, when Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first sitting president to use a helicopter from the White House grounds regularly. What once required a roughly 2-hour motorcade could reportedly be reduced to a flight lasting about 7 minutes, helping establish the helicopter as a permanent part of presidential transportation.

For almost 7 decades, the White House managed without one permanent granite platform. Ground crews typically positioned temporary circular landing disks on the lawn before a presidential arrival or departure. The newer aircraft changed that calculation because their heat and rotor wash placed more stress on the grass than the older VH-3D and VH-60N helicopters.

“Marine One” is not the permanent name of any 1 helicopter. It is the radio call sign assigned to a Marine Corps aircraft whenever the president is aboard. The helicopters are operated by Marine Helicopter Squadron One, better known as HMX-1, which handles presidential lift missions in Washington, across the United States and overseas.

A September deadline is adding pressure.

Trump reportedly wants the redesigned helipad completed by September 2026, ahead of an anticipated state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. That schedule helps explain the weeks of accelerated work, but dismantling the central seal and reconsidering the ground level could make the deadline harder to meet.

The timing also creates a basic construction risk: rushing a 100-foot centerpiece once is expensive, but rushing it twice could produce the same alignment or drainage problems that triggered the redesign. Any revised plan must satisfy presidential expectations, aviation requirements and the practical demands of maintaining one of America’s most photographed lawns.

The biggest number is still unknown.

The original $6 million ceiling is no longer the only figure that matters. The White House has not disclosed the value of the granite already installed, the labor cost of removing it, or the price of grading the South Lawn again. Lockheed Martin has also not publicly confirmed whether its contribution will automatically expand to cover the president’s requested revisions.

What began as a practical fix for a 23-helicopter fleet has now become a test of engineering, aesthetics and accountability. The granite may protect the grass, but the project will not be finished until the pad drains safely, looks level from the White House and satisfies a president who has already ordered weeks of work undone.
