Internal guidance reportedly authorizes United reservation agents to move eligible customers to another South Florida airport as an “even exchange.”
That could spare passengers from paying the fare difference normally associated with changing destinations, although alternatives remain subject to seat availability and agent discretion.
The decision transforms what began as a symbolic airport renaming into a practical travel issue involving reservations, airport codes, baggage systems, ground transportation, and passenger choice.
United Airlines Authorizes Free Changes Away From Trump Airport
United’s internal instructions tell reservation agents to consider Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport or Miami International Airport when customers say they no longer want to travel through the renamed West Palm Beach facility.
Agents have reportedly been directed to process approved changes as even exchanges. In practical terms, that means an eligible passenger could move from a West Palm Beach itinerary to an available United flight serving Fort Lauderdale or Miami without paying an additional fare.
We should not interpret the accommodation as an unlimited public travel waiver. The guidance uses language that gives reservation agents flexibility to offer an “acceptable alternative,” meaning approval may depend on available seats, schedules and the circumstances surrounding the reservation.
Travelers may therefore need to contact United directly rather than attempting to make the change through an automated booking page. They should clearly explain that they want to avoid the renamed airport and ask whether their itinerary qualifies for an even exchange.
Palm Beach Airport Became President Donald J. Trump International Airport
The airport’s new name officially took effect on July 9, 2026, after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation requiring the change.
Palm Beach County still owns and operates the airport, and the rebranding did not transfer control to Trump, his family, or the Trump Organization.
Florida law directed the county to pursue the approvals, licensing agreements, signage changes, and branding work required to implement the new name. The airport name is protected by trademark rights; county officials also entered into an agreement governing its authorized use.
The transformation is being introduced in phases. Travelers may temporarily encounter a mixture of old Palm Beach International branding and new President Donald J. Trump International Airport signs while physical and digital systems are updated.
Airport officials have emphasized that flights, security procedures, terminal services, and operational control remain unchanged. The controversy concerns the airport’s public identity, not its ability to handle commercial aviation.
The rebranding could cost as much as $5.5 million, including new signs, digital materials, and related updates. Trump’s privately owned Boeing 757 became the first aircraft to arrive after the new name took effect, with his son Eric Trump aboard.
PBI Will Become DJT on Tickets and Baggage Tags
The airport’s name changed before its passenger-facing three-letter code. Pilots, air traffic controllers, and aviation systems began using the FAA identifier DJT and the international aviation identifier KDJT on July 9.
Passengers, however, will continue seeing PBI in many reservation systems until the International Air Transport Association changes the commercial code to DJT on August 18, 2026.
The transition creates a period in which different parts of the aviation industry may display different identifiers for the same airport. Airline systems have been adjusted to prevent passengers or luggage from being sent to the wrong destination during the changeover.
After August 18, travelers searching for flights, reading boarding passes, or checking baggage tags should expect to see DJT replace PBI. Existing reservations may also display updated airport information as airline databases complete the transition.
United’s guidance addresses more than political objections. It also prepares employees for customers who may be confused by the use of Palm Beach, PBI, DJT, and President Donald J. Trump International Airport during the same transition period.
Fort Lauderdale and Miami Offer Alternative South Florida Gateways
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is approximately 45 miles south of the West Palm Beach airport, while Miami International Airport is roughly 72 miles away. Both provide access to South Florida, but neither is an exact substitute for travelers whose final destination is Palm Beach County.
A free airline change could still create additional ground expenses. Passengers may need to reorganize rental-car reservations, airport pickups, hotel transportation, or train connections.
United’s reported guidance covers the flight exchange, but it does not indicate that the airline will reimburse transportation costs created by choosing a more distant airport.
Fort Lauderdale will generally be the more convenient alternative for passengers continuing north toward Boca Raton, Delray Beach, or West Palm Beach. Miami may offer more flight options on certain routes, but the longer ground journey could diminish the value of switching.
