How to Make a Fruit and Cheese Flag Tray

Choose a variety of fruits and cheeses – When assembling your fruit and cheese platter, it’s important to choose a variety of fruits and cheeses to appeal to different taste buds. Some of the best patriotic options include blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries for their red and blue hues. Additionally, you can include cheeses such as cheddar, blue, and brie. You can also add crackers or nuts for an extra crunch.

Consider the presentation – The presentation of your fruit and cheese platter can be just as important as the flavor. Using a white or blue platter can highlight the red and blue colors of the fruits while arranging the cheeses in diagonal or circular shapes can add an extra element of style. You can also add some American flags or decorations to the platter for a patriotic touch.

Keep it fresh – It’s important to keep your fruit and cheese platter fresh for your guests. When assembling the platter, arrange the fruits and cheeses in a way that allows for easy access and avoids cross-contamination. Additionally, keep the platter in the refrigerator until just before serving to ensure that everything stays chilled and fresh.

Customize to your liking – One of the best things about a fruit and cheese platter is the ability to customize it to your liking. If you have guests with dietary restrictions, you can include vegan or gluten-free options. You can also add different types of fruit or cheese that you prefer. Don’t be afraid to get creative and make the platter your own!

Pair with wine or cocktails – To truly make your fruit and cheese platter stand out, consider pairing it with a patriotic-themed wine or cocktail. Red wine or sangria can complement the red fruits, while blue cocktails or white wine can pair nicely with blue cheese. You can even create a signature cocktail that reflects the colors of the American flag.

Variations

To finish off your platter, you can add some garnishes or additional snacks.

Fresh herbs like mint or basil can add a pop of green and some extra flavor.

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pistachios can provide some crunch and protein.

You can also add crackers, pretzels, or crostini to serve as a base for the cheese and fruit.

Tips:

  • Choose Wisely: I ended up using about 4 containers of strawberries because there are always bad ones in the container no matter how hard I try to pick good ones. I know this happens to everyone, so it’s nice to have extra for when this happens, or for refilling the platter, if need be.
  • Swap Cheese: You can also use mozzarella cheese, swiss, Colby, etc. in place of the white cheddar. The 8-ounce blocks I used were the perfect, sliceable size to fit the platter, which involved less work. If you are using different cheese, you’ll want to measure your space and fit your slices accordingly.
  • Arrange Neatly: As I was placing the strawberries and cheese, I had to slightly adjust things as I went along so it all fits nicely. You’ll have to play with the various strawberry sizes and you might have to slightly lift the strawberries so the cheese will fit into place.
  • Cut Carefully: You can slice the ends off your strawberries if you like. However, I noticed they stay fresher, longer when you just remove the stem instead of slicing. It also allows for easier grab-and-go without a mess since sliced strawberries tend to be juicy and stain hands. Leaving the strawberries unsliced will also alleviate the issue of the cheese getting gooey.
  • Customizable: You can use other items in place of the cheese if you prefer. White chocolate-covered pretzels, marshmallows, white chocolate-covered almonds, etc. would all make great choices.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 Pounds of Fresh Strawberries
  • 18 Ounces Fresh Blueberries
  • 2 8- Ounce Bars of White Cheddar Cheese

Instructions

  • After washing your fruit thoroughly and giving it time to dry, pull or slice the stems off your strawberries.
  • Place your blueberries in a small white bowl and place it in the corner as a placeholder for the square section.
  • Line the strawberries up in a double line, at the top of the platter, skip an equal amount of space and place another double line of strawberries. Skip another equal amount of space and at the very bottom of the platter place one final line of strawberries.
  • Be sure to keep your lines straight and be sure to line up the starting points of the first two double strawberry lines so the blueberry portion is even.
  • Slice your cheese blocks into about ¼-inch slices. Line two slices up side by side in the two open lines. Add another stack on top of each cheese line.
  • You can either leave your blueberries in the bowl or pour them into the remaining, open space. Enjoy!
